St. Anthony Girls Open Cage Season With Win

Effingham St. Anthony High School opened the 2017-18 girls basketball season by pounding Dieterich 63-21 in action Monday evening.

The Bulldogs stepped out to an 18-7 opening quarter lead and led 34-11 at halftime. All 10 players scored for St. Anthony. Four players hit double digits and those included Shea Kinkelaar with 13, Clare McHugh with 12 and Meg Richards and Olivia Clausius with 10 each.

Clausius had six rebounds and four steals while McHugh had seven assists.

"It was a great way to start the season with a great offensive game," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We shared the ball real well against their zone."

Dieterich was led by Emily Bloemer and Jennifer Robards with five each.

St. Anthony also claimed the junior varsity game 31-17. Rogers tallied eight for the Bulldogs while Bloemer led Dieterich with five.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis took a 17-4 opening quarter lead on Newton and outscored the Eagles 43-25 over the next three quarters for a 60-29 victory Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes' Hemmen  scored seven points in the opening quarter run and then had a nine point third period to finish as the leading scorer with 17 points. S. Bueker knocked down three trifectas and tallied 14 points.

T-town owned the boards as M. Michels pulled down seven, J. Bueker six, Grimes five and S. Bueker five. Hemmen came up with eight steals while J. Bueker, S. Bueker and Mette had four each. Michels came up with two blocked shots.

Newton was led in scoring by Josie Grunloh with eight and Abby Frohning with seven. Carr and Frohning led the Eagles in rebounding with five each.

At Altamont

Altamont High School picked up a 42-28 victory over Vandalia Tuesday evening.

The Indians stepped out to a 14-4 opening quarter lead as Tinley Mette knocked in eight points. The lead stood at 22-8 at halftime and 33-18 going into the final period.

Mette finished with 18 points while Shelbi Stone chipped in with 10 for the Indians.

Altamont also claimed the junior varsity contest 31-13.
