T-town, CHBC, Altamont Claim Girls Season Openers

TEUTOPOLIS -- Teutopolis High School opened the 2017-18 girls basketball season with a 59-29 win over Sullivan Monday evening.

The Wooden Shoes held only a 12-11 opening quarter lead but came roaring out with a 22-6 second period. J. Bueker tallied eight points while S. Bueker added five for the Shoes in that quarter.

T-town then had a 16-4 third period. Three players hit the double digit mark for the Shoes. M. Michels led the way with 15 points while J. Bueker scored 14 and S. Bueker 12. M. Mette had three assists. Michels blocked two shots. Leading in rebounds were J. Bueker with seven and Michels with six. J. Bueker also led in steals with eight.

At Farina

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City trounced host South Central 56-13. CHBC led 25-3 after the opening quarter and the game was in the bag.

Jaelyn Robertson scored 17 for the winners while Kylee Bertin chipped in with 10.Tabitha Endsley led in rebounds with five. Bertin had seven steals. Darby Moon had four assists.

South Central was led by Katlyn Hilmes with 11 points.

"This was the first game at the high school level for most of our girls," said South Central Coach Gary Kapper. "It showed in the first half as they were overwhelmed with the speed of the game and the speed you have to play at the varsity level. In the second half we settled down and played better.

"With only seven girls on the team, it showed that we need to get in better shape to go four quarters. As they play more together, they will get used to each other and we will find how it all fits together. They worked hard the whole game and the effort was there."

Moweaqua Central A&M trailed Neoga after the opening quarter but came back to have a 49-26 margin over the next three periods for a 60-38 victory Monday evening.

Banning tallied 12 for Neoga while Estay and Atwell had eight each.

Neoga plays host to Arcola Thursday.

Altamont opened the season with a 54-25 win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in action Monday evening.

The Indians held an 11-6 opening quarter lead then pushed that to 27-10 at halftime. The two teams played even in the third period before Altamont had a 19-7 final period.

Mette tallied 10 while Runge and Guse scored nine each for the winners.

WSS was led by Hayes with eight.
