BEECHER CITY -- Sigel St. Michael and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City will be playing for the championship of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament after picking up victories Thursday evening.

St. Michael handed South Central a 33-22 loss in the first game. St. Michael took a 15-11 opening half lead then had an 8-3 third quarter run.

Cremens tallied 11 and Niebrugge 10 for the winners. South Central was led by Smith with eight points and Webster with seven.

In the second game, CHBC was a 33-19 winner over Dieterich. CHBC took an 8-2 opening quarter lead and led 18-9 at halftime.

Wojcik tallied 11 and Morrison 10 for the winners. Dieterich was led by Boerngen with eight.

The tournament continues tonight as North Clay faces Altamont at 6 followed by Neoga against Brownstown/St. Elmo at 7:15 in consolation bracket action.

St. Michael will take on Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 11:30 a.m. Saturday for the championship. South Central meets Dieterich at 10:15 for third place.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony split victories with Nokomis.

The Bullpups won the eighth-grade game 39-19. St. Anthony took a 21-11 halftime lead. Guy tallied 16 for the winners while Strullmyer added eight. St. Anthony is now 10-1.

In seventh-grade action, Nokomis claimed a 31-18 victory. St. Anthony was led by Fearday with eight points. The Bullpups drop to 4-9 on the season.
