Sigel St. Michael to Play for Third At State; Roundup

NORMAL -- Sigel St. Michael will play for third place at the Class 7-1A State Girls Basketball Tournament after action Saturday.

In the opening game, the Sharpshooters defeated Jacksonville Our Saviour 35-21. The Sharpshooters were sharp in the opening quarter running out to a 14-4 lead and taking a 21-8 halftime lead. Jolene Bueker taliled six of her 11 points in the first half and Leah Jansen added seven to give St. Michael a lead they would never relinquish.

Bueker finished with 11 points and Bailey Schumacher and Jansen tallied nine each.

In the second game of the day, St. Michael fell to Danville Schlarman 44-20. Schlarman held an 18-8 opening quarter lead and had a 12-2 third period run.

Schumacher tallied eight for the Sharpshooters.

Schlarman's Ariel Scott had six three-pointers in the game and three in the opening quarter setting a new state record for most three point baskets in a game.The previous record was four set by Zahna Medley of Springfield Calvary in 2006. Scott finished with 22 points. Anaya Peoples added a three of her own in the opening quarter to help give the Hilltoppers the 18-8 lead. Peoples finished with 14 points.

The Sharpshooters will now meet Okaw Valley in the third place game Thursday at 6 p.m. Lincoln West Lincoln-Broadwell will take on Danville Schlarman at 7:30 for the state title.

Class 7-2A State Tournament

Altamont saw its season come to a close in the Class 7-2A State Tournament Saturday with a 42-13 loss to Princeville.

Princeville put on a swarming press that frustrated the Wildcats throughout the first half, limiting the Wildcats to two points. Marissa Horton-Meza scored 17 of her 27 points in the first half putting the Princes in a comfortable lead. The Wildcats shook off their jitters in the third quarter outscoring the Wildcats. Unfortunately, the swarming press continued to haunt the Wildcats in the fourth quarter.

Horton-Meza finished with 27 points for the winners. Leah Mayhaus led Altamont with six points. Altamont finishes the season with a 20-5 record.

Princeville advanced to fall to Bloomington Holy Trinity 30-20. Princeville will now face Kinderhook Western at 6 p.m. Thursday for third place. Bloomington Holy Trinity takes on Winchester at 7:30 p.m. for the championship.

Class 7-3A State Tournament

Eureka set the tempo early enroute to a 42-27 quarterfinal victory over Brownstown Saturday in the 3-A State Tourney.

Eureka held a 20-10 halftime lead and came out with a 15-5 third period charge. Natalie Bardwell tallied 11 and Tessa Leman 10 for the winners. Brownstown was led by Deana Shelton with 11 on five field goals.

Brownstown's season ends with a 16-6 record. Eureka downed Auburn 30-22 to advance to the championship game against Monticello at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Auburn and Crest Hill Richland meet for third place at 6 p.m.
