NTC Tourney Opens, St. Anthony Picks up Seventh-Grade Win

STRASBURG -- The National Trail Conference Junior High School Seventh-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament got underway Saturday at Stewardson-Strasburg.

In the opening game, Effingham Sacred Heart beat Beecher City 34-22. Helmink tallied 13 and Kruger 12 for the winners. Galloway led Beecher City with 14.

In the second contest, Altamont downed Neoga 40-32. Brown and Stevenson provided the one-two scoring punch for Altamont with 12 points each. Andrews led Neoga with nine.

St. Elmo/Brownstown claimed the third game victory over Cowden-Herrick 33-30. Maxey scored 13 for the winners. Watson had nine for Cowden-Herrick.

In the final game, Stew-Stras beat Windsor 29-8. Thies was the lone player in double figures with 11. Armes led Windsor with six.

At Mattoon

St. Anthony picked up a seventh-grade B victory Saturday at Mattoon over the host squad, 34-16.

St. Anthony held a 17-10 first half lead and had a 10-2 third period run. Zimmerman led the winners with seven points. Maulding led Mattoon with six.
