EHS, Mattoon Split Frosh/Soph Boys Games; Area Roundup

Effingham High School's freshmen/sophomore boys basketball teams played host to Mattoon and split wins with the Green Wave Thursday evening.

Mattoon claimed the freshman contest 38-34. Effingham held an 11-4 opening quarter lead but Mattoon came back to lead 20-15 at halftime. Effingham pulled within 27-26 going into the final period when Mattoon had an 11-8 scoring run.

Smith led Mattoon with 13 points while Scott and Lilly tallied 10 each. Effingham was led by Michael Woltman with 10.

In the sophomore game, Effingham captured a 64-40 victory. Four players hit double figures for the Hearts, Braydon Bone tallied 15, Frank Kasdorf 12, Luis Ramos 12 and Michael Carie 11.

At St. Anthony

St. Anthony and Teutopolis both picked up a victory Thursday evening. The Bulldogs won the freshman contest 57-46. T-town held a 17-8 opening quarter lead but St. Anthony pulled within 27-24 at halftime. The Bulldogs then had a 15-6 third period run and went on for the victory.

Jeff Niebrugge led the Bulldogs with 22 points while Grunloh tallied 15. T-town was led by D. Smith with 12 and Jackson with 11.

In the sophomore contest, T-town was a 67-45 winner. The Wooden Shoes leaped out to a 21-8 opening quarter lead and never looked back. Three players hit double figures but the scoresheet is so light the names are unreadable. St. Anthony was led by Puckett and Rios with 10 each.

At Altamont

Altamont High School's freshman boys squad picked up a victory over Shelbyville Thursday evening.

Altamont was a 73-62 winner. Adam Mayhaus tallied 27 points and Klaiton Wolff 21 for the winners.
