Three Area Teams Headed To Junior High Girls State Tourneys

Three area junior high school girls basketball teams are headed to state tournaments after winning sectionals Wednesday evening.

Class 7-1A St. Anthony Sectional

Sigel St. Michael claimed the championship of the Effingham St. Anthony Sectional. The Sharpshooters edged Pana Sacred Heart 23-21.

St. Michael takes an 18-3 record to the 7-1A State Tournament at Normal Chiddix Junior High School Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. contest against Jacksonville Our Saviour (16-7).

Class 7-2A Stewardson-Strasburg Sectional

Altamont held on for an 18-16 victory over Paris Crestwood to win the Stew-Stras Sectional championship.

Altamont edged out to a 5-4 opening quarter lead but Paris Crestwood came back with a 3-1 run in the second period to lead 7-6 at halftime. Altamont then had an 8-4 third period run to pull out the victory.

Hannah Wolf led the winners with seven points. Altamont takes a 20-4 record to the 7-2A State Tournament at Leroy Junior High School Saturday against Princeville (21-2).

7-3A Vandalia Sectional

Brownstown claimed the championship of the Vandalia Sectional Wednesday evening.

Brownstown handed Roxana a 24-10 defeat. The squad moves on to the 3A State Tournament at Assumption Central A&M Middle School Saturday in the first game of the day at 10 a.m. against Eureka (21-1).  Brownstown sports a 16-5 record.

7-3A Teutopolis Sectional

Jasper County saw its bid for a state tournament berth come to a close at the hands of Paris Mayo in the Teutopolis Sectional.

Paris Mayo claimed a 32-28 victory.

7-4A Mahomet-Seymour Sectional

Effingham's season came to a close in the Mahomet-Seymour Sectional Wednesday evening.

The Mustangs fell to Urbana 30-22. Effingham held a 7-4 opening quarter lead and still led 12-11 at halftime. The Mustangs were 17-16 leaders going into the final quarter when Urbana went on a 14-5 run for the win.

V. Ramos led the Mustangs in points with seven. S. Meyers led in rebounds with 10 while C. Martin had seven.

Urbana advances to the 4A State Tournament at Normal Parkside Junior High School with a 17-7 record and will face Chatham Glenwood Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
