Dieterich, Brownstown, Newton Claim Girls Wins

ALTAMONT -- Dieterich High School improved its girls basketball record to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the National Trail Conference by downing Altamont 41-33 Monday evening.

Dieterich edged out to a 10-6 opening quarter lead and led 17-12 at halftime. The Maroons then had a 24-21 run in the second half. Candace Niemerg led the winners with 15 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and three steals. Sydney Higgs added 12 points and five boards.

Altamont was led by Macy Wendling with 12 points and Lauren Ohnesorge with 10.

Brownstown defeated South Central 44-28. The Bombers jumped out to a 19-4 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

M. Hill tallied 22 while B. Oberline chipped in with 10. South Central was led by M. Cain with 12.

At Newton

Newton hammered Edwards County (Albion) in action Monday evening, 64-23.

The Eagles led 37-15 at halftime. Morgan Swingler led the Eagles with 14 points. Allison Will tallied nine, Megan Jansen eight and three players with seven in even scoring, Emily Kerner, Tara Wirth and Amy Bierman. Andrea Cartright led in rebounds with six.

The Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season.

Flora defeated North Clay (Louisville) 60-22. Flora edged out to an 8-5 opening quarter lead then outscored the Cardinals 14-5 in the second period and went on for a 26-8 run in the third quarter.

Flora was led by Jones with 10, Hout, Bayles and Warren with nine each. North Clay was led by Stanfield with seven.
