Effingham Junior High School claimed seventh and eighth-grade boys basketball victories over Charleston Thursday evening.

The seventh-grade squad used a solid defensive effort to win 44-24 in an Apollo Conference contest. The Mustangs placed seven players in the scoring column led by Ryan Sandifer with 14. Matthew Robinson and Noah Spencer led the team in rebounding with five each and Mason Hull had three steals.

The Mustangs are now 1-1 in the conference, 3-2 overall and return to action Saturday as they travel to Champaign to play Edison Middle School.

In eighth-grade action, Jacob Donaldson led 10 players in the scoring column with 13 as the Mustangs won 51-31.

Donaldson led in rebounds with five while Lane Koenig had four boards. Grant Wolfe led in steals with four. The Mustangs are now 5-0 overall.

At Sacred Heart

Altamont came calling and claimed two victories over Effingham Sacred Heart.

Altamont was a 50-10 winner in seventh-grade play. Altamont had a 30-2 first half lead. Brown tallied 20 while Pemberton scored 12 for the winners. Helmink led Sacred Heart with six.

In eighth-grade action, Altamont was a 54-29 winner. Armstrong and Cornett provided the one-two scoring punch with 16 points each. Tegeler led the Shamrocks with eight points.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown and Cowden-Herrick split wins. Cowden-Herrick edged the homestanders 36-35 in seventh-grade play. Cowden-Herrick took a 21-18 halftime lead then had to fight off a final quarter challenge.

Rauch scored 17 for the winners. Brown tallied 21 for  St. Elmo/Brownstown.

In eighth-grade action, St. Elmo/Brownstown won 43-23. The winners led 25-16 going into the final quarter then had an 18-7 run. Feezel led with 13 while Austin chipped in with 10. Sandifor tallied 12 for Cowden-Herrick.

At Newton

Teutopolis downed Jasper Couinty in both seventh and eighth-grade action.

T-town was a 52-27 winner in the seventh-grade contest. T-town held a 23-18 halftime lead then outscored Jasper County 29-10 in the second half. Lee Hardiek tallied 16, Collin Funneman 10 and Ethyn Dust 10. Jasper County was led by Cohorst with eight.

In the eighth-grade contest, T-town stepped out to a 23-13 halftime lead and went on for a 38-25 win. Jason Kenter led the winners with 10. Weber led Jasper County with 11.

At Strasburg

Stewardson-Strasburg edged Sigel St. Michael 30-29 in seventh-grade play Tuesday evening. Stew-Stras led 14-10 at halftime and St. Michael came back with a 19-16 second half run but fell short. Kessler tallied nine for the winners who improve to 4-2. Wolke led St. Michael with nine.

In eighth-grade action, St. Michael was a 27-18 winner. St. Michael led 10-7 at halftime then had a 13-6 third period run. Brock Bueker tallied nine for the winners. Overbeck led Stew-Stras (2-5) with six.
