Rem Woodruff has been hired as new Effingham Hearts boys basketball coach. The hiring was finalized at a special meeting of the Unit 40 School Board Monday evening.

Woodruff is retiring as Unit 40 assistant superintendent. He said his retirement will free up his time not only to work with the varsity squad, but also work to establish a good relationship and continuity at all levels.

Unit 40 Board President Jeff Michael said Woodruff's performance and character while working in the district are keys to his hiring. Here's what Michael had to share after Monday night's meeting...

A Meet the Coach event is set for 6pm Thursday at EHS in the conference room just off the cafetorium to give EHS players and their parents the opportunity to talk with Coach Woodruff.

Woodruff has varsity coaching experience at Casey-Westfield, going 63-42 in four seasons with a regional championship. He also has assisted on the Dieterich coaching staff, and worked on the Unit 40 staff as an assistant for several seasons.

The Board also hired Vandalia native Blake Doehring to serve as Woodruff's chief assistant. Doehring has been serving as Cerro Gordo/Bement boys basketball coach. Other spots on the coaching staff are yet to be filled.

Woodruff will succeed Ron Reed as boys coach. Reed resigned as coach soon after the past season ended after 15 years as Hearts coach.
