Breese Mater Dei Edges EHS in OT

The game was on the agenda as a battle that would rage from start to finish and it was all that and more as Breese Mater Dei edged Effingham 54-53 in overtime Tuesday evening.

The Hearts stepped out to a 22-13 opening quarter lead as Grant Wolfe went on a a rampage, connecting on two three-pointers and two regular baskets for 10 of his team's 22 points. Jacob Donaldson was no slouch, hitting two three-pointers and scoring eight points.

The Hearts were still on the winning track in the second quarter but the Knights were starting to rumble. Mater Dei outscored EHS 15-12 to pull within 34-28 at halftime.

That continued into the third quarter as the Knights had a 12-9 run to pull within 43-40. Mater Dei didn't take the lead until the fourth quarter and never led in the game by more than a basket. The score was tied at 49-49.

The Knights got the ball with 45 seconds, killed the clock and got the ball inside to Mason Toennies whose game-winning shot came after the buzzer and wasn't counted. The contest then went into overtime.

In the overtime period, Nolan Robben tallied three points and Toennies made two free throws for seven points. The Hearts had a basket from Mason Hull and two free throws from Landon Wolfe. Toennies basket with four seconds in the overtime period was the game winner. Grant Wolfe launched a three-point shot from half court that didn't go in and the Knights pulled out the victory.

Effingham was led by G. Wolfe with 19 points and Donaldson with 15. L. Wolfe was on the brink of double figures with nine points.

Mater Dei was led by Robben with 18 points and Toennies finished with 15.

The Hearts drop to 23-4 and will finish out regular season play Friday night. EHS will host Taylorville in a final Apollo Conference contest.
