CHBC, WSS, Cumberland Nab Opening Regional Wins

ALTAMONT -- Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City High School edged South Central 51-46 in opening round play at the Class 1A Altamont Boys Basketball Regional Monday evening.

CHBC pushed ahead 8-4 in the opening quarter and held a 20-10 halftime lead. The Cougars came back in the third quarter with a 21-16 run to pull within 36-31. But the Cougars couldn't overcome that first half deficit as the two squads played to a 15-15 fourth quarter.

South Central was led by Trevor Markley with 18.

Konner Blackerby led the Bobcats with 18 points while Aaron Nohren chipped in with 17. The Bobcats  will now face No. 2 Nokomis at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Tonight's games at Altamont feature No. 3 Altamont against No. 13 Ramsey at 6 p.m. followed by St. Elmo/Brownstown, seeded fifth, against No. 11 Mulberry Grove at 7:30 p.m.

Class 1A Bethany Okaw Valley Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg opened its run in the Bethany Okaw Valley Regional with a 56-53 win over Buffalo Tri-City.

WSS stepped out to a 21-13 opening quarter lead and led 32-23 at halftime. Tri-City came back with a 30-24 second half run but the Hatchets held on for the win.

Three players scored in double figures for the Hatchets. Isaac Kramer tallied 15 while Chase Thies scored 13 and Nic Hutchinson 12. Christian Kessler and Josh Overbeck rounded out the scoring with eight each.

The Hatchets improve to 15-13 and will now face top-seeded Patoka at 7 p.m. today.

In the second game, Bethany Okaw Valley beat Edinburg Co-op 51-39. Bethany Okaw Valley faces Moweaqua Central A&M Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Class 2A Pana Regional

Cumberland moved ahead with a 61-32 pounding of Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond in the opening game of the Pana Regional Monday evening.

The Pirates stepped out to a 13-4 opening quarter lead and led 32-12 at halftime.

Tyson Magee led the way for the Pirates with 24 points while Zach Wolke tallied 17 and Mike Wolke scored 15.

The Pirates advance to face top-seeded Teutopolis today at 7 p.m.

In the second contest Monday, Pana defeated Sullivan 45-32. Pana advances to meet Shelbyville at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Class 2A Newton Regional

Newton saw its season come to a close with a 62-52 loss to Lawrenceville in opening round play at its own 2A regional Monday evening.

Lawrenceville edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead but Newton came back with a 16-15 run to tie the score at 27-27 at halftime. The Eagles pushed ahead 44-42 going into the final quarter but the Indians went on a 20-8 run for the victory.

Newton had two players in double figures. Tim Weber tallied 13 while Jack Chapman added 10.

In the opening contest, Casey-Westfield beat Red Hill (Bridgeport) 70-68.

Lawrenceville advances to face Robinson at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Tonight's game features Marshall against Casey-Westfield at 7.

Class 1A Dieterich Regional

Two games were contested at the Dieterich Regional Monday evening.

Martinsville downed Hutsonville/Palestine 55-45 while Cisne pounded Clay City 85-53.

Dieterich will now take on Martinsville at 7 p.m. today. Cisne advances to face Oblong at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Class 1A North Clay (Louisville) Regional

One game was contested Monday evening in the North Clay Regional.

Odin defeated Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 48-34. Odin advances to face Effingham St. Anthony Wednesday at 6 p.m.

In games tonight, Neoga takes on Sandoval at 6 p.m. followed by North Clay against Grayville at 7:30.
