The 2017 Class 2A sectional champion Teutopolis Shoes.

The Teutopolis Shoes had to go to overtime to earn a sectional championship win over the Newton Eagles Thursday night in girls basketball action. Teutopolis downed Newton 62-50 in a game heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

With the win, the Shoes advance to Super-Sectional action Monday night at Parkland College in Champaign to take on Bloomington Central Catholic. It'll be the second straight season that T-Town will play BCC in the Super at Parkland. Teutopolis won last season on the way to a Final Four finish at the State Tournament.

This season, a trip to Parkland was in some doubt as Newton gave Teutopolis all they wanted throughout regulation and forced overtime on back-to-back three-pointers by Ariel Richards.

The extra period was a different story, though, as Teutopolis got its own back-to-back three-pointers from Shelby Thompson on the way to a 12-0 start to the overtime and outscored Newton 16-4 to post the 12-point win.

The quarter-by-quarter indicate how close the game was throughout, Teutopolis leading 13-12 after one quarter, 28-24 after three quarters, and 36-30 after three quarters before Newton outscored the Shoes 16-10 in the fourth quarter to force the overtime.

Teutopolis shot 41% for the game, 16 of 39, including 3 of 17 threes. The Shoes went 27 of 39 from the line, overcame a whopping 21 turnovers, and grabbed 37 rebounds.

Newton shot 35% from the field, 19 of 54, including 4 of 13 threes. Newton made 8 of 11 foul shots, turned the ball over 16 times, and pulled down 23 rebounds.

Shelby Thompson led Teutopolis, and all scorers, with 21 points. Sadie Bueker scored 13 points and Jolene Bueker added 12 points, while Raegan Drees scored 8 points and Jamie Sandschafer 6. Marianna Hemmen added 2 points.

Ariel Richards led Newton with 16 points, while Kaitlyn Cohorst scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Grace Hartrich scored 11 points, while Abby Frohning scored 5, and Olivia Shipman and Mariah Earnest added 4 points each.

Newton ends its season with a 23-8 record, the most wins in a season in Newton girls' history, a regional championship, and a conference championship. The Eagles say goodbye to seniors Grace Hartrich, Ariel Richards, Olivia Shipman, Kaitlyn Cohorst and Lauren Probst.

Teutopolis improved to 28-5. Game time Monday night is 7pm. The game can be heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

In the Country Financial Three-Point Showdown, Kelsey Krutsinger of Flora and Olivia Shipman of Newton advanced to the State Finals next Thursday in Bloomington.
