Shoes Drub Marshall, Mattoon Downs Bulldogs

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes bounced back from a bus crash Friday night to blitz the Marshall Lions 73-35 Saturday in the finale of the 2017 Teutopolis Shootout.

Meanwhile, the Mattoon Green Wave made 12 three pointers on their way to a 72-61 victory over the St. Anthony Bulldogs in Game 3 of the Shootout.

Teutopolis 73, Marshall 35

The Wooden Shoes led start-to-finish over a Marshall squad that came into the game with a 20-4 record.

The Shoes were up 20-12 after the first quarter before unloading on the Lions 45-15 in the middle two quarters.

Teutopolis played without starter Brock Bueker, who was not dressed due to injuries received in the Teutopolis team's bus accident Friday night. Marshall was also down a starter, playing without Spencer Shaffner.

The Wooden Shoes shot 54% from the field, 29 of 54, including 5 of 18 threes. The Shoes made 10 of 17 foul shots, committed just seven turnovers, and pulled down 30 rebounds. 

Marshall shot just 29% from the field, 13 of 45, including 5 of 15 threes. They were 4 of 7 from the line, committed 13 turnovers, and pulled down 22 rebounds.

Everyone dressed for Teutopolis saw playing time and almost everyone scored. Mitch Hardiek led the Shoes with 17 points playing about half the game. Blake Mette earned the start with Brock Bueker out and scored 16 points. Eric Kremer came off the bench to score 14 points. Also for the Shoes: Brant Bueker 7, Lane Belleville 6, Lucas Deters 5, and Lee Hardiek, Dawson Smith, Landon Jansen and Brandt Young 2 each.

Josiah Wallace led Marshall with 15 points.

Teutopolis improved to 24-3 on the season, while Marshall slipped to 20-5.

Mattoon 72, St. Anthony 61

The Bulldogs just couldn't counteract a barrage of three pointers by Mattoon while struggling on offense themselves.

Mattoon led 13-10 after one quarter, 29-20 at halftime, and 48-36 after three quarters. St. Anthony outscored Mattoon 25-24 in the fourth quarter, but Mattoon won by 11.

The Green Wave hit 22 of 40 shots but that included 12 of 22 shooting from three point range. Mattoon finished 14 of 25 from the foul line, only one of those foul shots coming before the fourth quarter. Mattoon turned the ball over 14 times and grabbed 21 rebounds.

St. Anthony made 23 of 55 shots, including just 3 of 20 on threes. The Bulldogs were 12 of 19 from the line, turned the ball over 12 times, and pulled down 22 rebounds.

Drake Jeffries, battling back after an early season knee injury, led Mattoon with 18 points. DeAndre Thomas scored 14 points, and Davis Johnson scored 11 points. Also for Mattoon: Jadyn Prinko and Jacob Spitz 9 each, Justus Donaldson 7 points, and Dalton Stephens 4 points.

Drew Gibson battled through a tough shooting night to lead St. Anthony with 17 points. Jack Nuxoll with 13 and Adam Levitt with 10 points were also in double figures. Also for the Bulldogs: Alex Beesley 9, Alex Deters 6, Cade Walsh 4, and Wyatt Lawrence 2.

St. Anthony dropped to 22-4, while Mattoon improved to 8-17.
