Hearts Beat Newton; Other Tuesday 1-31-2017 Basketball Scores

 The Effingham Hearts shot 57% from the field in defeating the Newton Eagles 86-59 Tuesday night. The game at EHS was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Effingham scored early and often and led 21-7 after one quarter. The Hearts posted a 29-16 edge in the second quarter to lead 50-23 at halftime and then outscored the Eagles 22-11 in the third period to lead 72-34. Newton outpointed the Hearts 25-14 in the fourth quarter. The Hearts at one point held a 40-point lead.

Effingham made 30 of 53 shots including 9 of 19 threes. The Hearts made 12 of 18 foul shots, turned the ball over just nine times, and grabbed 19 rebounds.

Newton also shot the ball well, making 23 of 45 shots, 51%, but just 4 of 16 threes. The Eagles made 9 of 12 foul shots, committed 20 turnovers and pulled down 16 rebounds.

Landon Wolfe scored 25 points to lead Effingham in scoring, hitting 10 of 10 shots, including three threes.

Grant Wolfe scored 18 points and Brent Beals scored 12 points. None of those three players played in the fourth quarter. Jacob Donaldson and Trevor Kreke each scored nine points, Mason Hull 7, Ryan Sandifer 4, and Donte Latham 2.

Joe Stone led Newton in scoring with 17 points, while Nicholas Cohorst scored 13 points and Ben Carr 12 points. Also for Newton: Nate Meinhart 5, Jack Chapman 4, and Tim Weber, Noah Wagy, Mitch Jansen and Zach Jansen 2 apiece.

Effingham improved to 18-3 on the season, while Newton slipped to 10-11.

Effingham won the JV game 48-44. Ryan Sandifer had a huge JV game for the Hearts, scoring 33 points.
