Bulldogs Beat ALAH, Area Girls Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony trailed Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond in the early going but came back strong to down the host squad 46-42 in girls basketball competition Tuesday evening.

ALAH came out with a 13-11 opening quarter as Wellbaum scored 10 of her team's 11 points. But the Bulldogs' defense held Wellbaum scoreless in the second period for a 22-19 halftime lead.

The Bulldogs had a 14-12 third quarter to lead 36-31 and then held off a final challenge for the victory.

Abby Weis tallied 14 points while Clare McHugh chipped in with 13.

"Tonight was a great game for us," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We beat a quality team on the road. The girls stayed focused down the stretch and Abby Weis and Clare McHugh hit three of four huge free throws in the last 20 seconds.

"All 15 girls in the varsity and junior vasrity did a tremendous job."

St. Anthony won the junior varsity game 40-32.

At Dieterich

Dieterich picked up a non-conference victory over Sandoval 44-38 Tuesday evening.

The Movin' Maroons stepped out to an 18-11 opening quarter lead and led 27-17 at halftime. Dieterich had a 15-13 third period.

Anna Shadle and Andrea Bierman tallied 13 points each for Dieterich. Gracie Britton chipped in with 10. Cassie Vahling led in rebounds with nine while Kaitlyn Bloemer pulled down eight. Britton and Vahling led in assists with four each. Britton, Vahling and Bloemer had three steals each.

Sandoval was led by Hannah Hill and Zoie Wilkins with eight each.

Dieterich improves to 5-18.

North Clay (Lousiville) picked up a National Trail Conference victory over Brownstown/St. Elmo Tuesday evening, 51-40.

The Cardinals held a 17-12 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 32-19 at halftime. BSE came back with a 14-9 third quarter but North Clay got back on track in the final period.

Audrey Fleener, a junior, tallied 13 points while Madi Craig, also a junior, tallied 12.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Elizabeth Johnson with eight points.
