EHS Edges Salem, T-town Beats Mt. Zion, Area Boys Roundup

SALEM -- Effingham High School headed back to Salem after finishing third in the Wildcats tourney last week and handed the host squad a 47-44 loss Tuesday evening.

The Hearts leaped out to an 18-9 opening quarter lead as Mason Hull knocked in a three-pointer and picked up two more baskets for seven points while Landon Wolfe tallied two baskets and a free throw, Brent Beals two baskets and Jacob Donaldson a bucket.

The two squads played to a 15-15 second quarter and the Hearts held a 33-24 halftime lead.

Salem then attempted a comeback with a 12-9 third quarter run and outscored the Hearts 8-5 in the final period. But that first quarter held up for the Hearts.

EHS was led by Grant Wolfe with 17 points and Landon Wolfe with 15.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis improved to 19-2 on the season with a 76-69 victory over Mount Zion Tuesday.

The Braves ripped out to a 22-13 opening quarter lead as Jonah Smith banged home three trifectas and Charles Kuhl nailed three baskets, including a three-pointer. Two other Braves sent home a three-pointer each for six in the period.

But the Shoes found their groove in the second period to pull within 39-35 at halftime. Mitch Hardiek got untracked and put in 12 points in the quarter.

T-town came out in the second half and put it together, outscoring Mount Zion 41-20 to claim the 76-69 victory. After the opening quarter six three-pointers by the Braves, T-town's defense held them without another one the rest of the way.

Four players hit the double figure mark for the Shoes. Hardiek led with 23 while Brock Bueker tallied 15, Lane Belleville 12 and Brant Bueker 11. Belleville led in rebounds with 10 while Hardiek and Brock Bueker pulled down six each.

Mount Zion dropped to 12-7 on the season.

The Shoes also claimed the junior varsity contest to improve to 7-0.

T-town will be back in action Friday at Breese Mater Dei with junior varsity time at 5:30 p.m.

 At Oblong

Tri-County upset top-seeded Cumberland 67-59 in the Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division Tournament Tuesday evening.

The Pirates held a 15-13 opening quarter lead but Tri-County came back to move ahead 33-25 at halftime. Tri-County had a 14-10 third period edge. Cumberland came back with a 24-20 final period but it was too little, too late.

Tri-County, the No. 5 seed, advances to the championship game Friday at 8 p.m. while Cumberland drops into the third place contest at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Mike Wolke tallied 18 points for the Pirates while Zach Wolke chipped in with 17. The Pirates are 9-8 on the season.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

The field is almost all set for the finals at the Little Illini Conference Tournament in Marshall.

Tuesday evening's games found Marshall beating Olney 55-30 and Robinson winning over Lawrenceville 54-42.

Marshall will now take on Robinson at 8 p.m. Friday for the championship while Olney and Lawrenceville square off for third at 6:30.

Tonight's games find Flora against Casey-Westfield and Red Hill (Bridgeport) taking on Paris at 6 and 7:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the consolation championship Friday at 5.
