Dieterich Opens NTC Tourney With Win, Newton Falls In LIC

ALTAMONT -- The 82nd Annual National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament got underway Monday evening with one game on tap.

Dieterich captured a 66-50 win over North Clay (Louisville). Dieterich led throughout with the exception of one early two-point deficit and a tie score in the second quarter.

The Movin' Maroons led by as much as 22 points in the second period before North Clay began a run to cut the deficit to 14. But Dieterich regrouped and pulled back away for the 16-point victory.

The Maroons made 51 percent of their shots with 28 of 55 including three of 11 threes. North Clay hit 39 percent of its shots with 20 of 51 including 0 of 7 from the three-point line.

Ryan Radloff tallied 24 for the winners while Callaway Campton added 17 and Tyler Higgs 16. The guard combo of Devin Flach and Bryce McClain fed their bigger teammates for buckets.

Bryce Walker led North Clay with 13 points while Bryce Holkenbrink added 11.

With the win, Dieterich advances to play top-seeded Effingham St. Anthony Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. St. Elmo/Brownstown takes on South Central in the nightcap.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Newton saw its stay at the Little Illini Conference Tournament come to an end with a 61-58 loss to Flora Monday evening.

The Eagles stepped out to a 17-13 opening quarter lead and led 30-23 at halftime. The two squads played to a 10-10 third quarter. But Flora came alive in the final period. The Wolves went on a tear and outscored Newton 28-18 to pull out the three point victory.

Newton was led by Ben Carr with 14 points while Nicholas Cohorst tallied 11.

Flora advances in consolation bracket play to face Casey-Westfield at 6 p.m. Wednesday. In the second contest Wednesday, Red Hill (Bridgeport) takes on Paris at 7:30.

In winner bracket play tonight, Marshall faces Olney at 6 followed by Robinson against Lawrenceville at 7:30.
