EJHS Beats St. A For Tourney Title, St. Michael Nabs NTC Tourney

GREENVILLE -- It was an all-Effingham championship game at the James Burke Memorial Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Friday as Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony squared off for the title.

The two squads were tied at 10-10 after the opening quarter. Effingham edged ahead 19-16 at halftime. But the Bullpups came roaring back in the third period with a 16-4 run and led 32-23. Then it was the Mustangs turn to come back with an 18-8 final quarter to pull out a 41-40 victory.

Parker Wolfe tallied 20 for the Mustangs while Tristin Duncan added nine. This was the seventh time Effingham has won the Greenville championship.

St. Anthony was led by Logan Antrim with 12, Kennan Walsh with 11 and Eli Moore with 11.

Wolfe, Duncan, Antrim, Walsh and Caden Bee were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Effingham improves to 13-6 on the season.

National Trail Conference Tournament

Sigel St. Michael downed Altamont 40-31 to win the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Basketball Tournament Friday.

The Sharpshooters held a 20-12 halftime lead then had a 20-19 second half.

Niebrugge tallied 11 to lead the winners. Altamont was led by Eirhart with 13.

Neoga edged St. Elmo/Brownstown 43-41 for third place.

SEB edged out to a 22-20 halftime lead but Neoga came back with a 23-19 second half to pull out the 43-41 victory.

Johnson tallied 20 for the winners. SEB was led by Rosborough with 21.

The consolation championship went to Dieterich over Effingham Sacred Heart 36-26.

Dieterich held a 19-14 halftime lead then had a 17-12 second half. Will tallied 13 to lead Dieterich. The Shamrocks were led by Tegeler with 13.
