The Eighth-Grade National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament got underway Monday.

In the openining contest, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City won over Stewardson-Strasburg 41-21. CHBC edged out to a 19-10 opening quarter lead then had a 17-7 third quarter. K. Persinger tallied 13 while Lucas scored 11 for the winners. Stew-Stras was led by Bugger with 11.

North Clay (Louisville) then downed Windsor 41-23. North Clay held a 29-9 halftime lead and never looked back. The winners were led by Bible with 17 points. Windsor was led by Colclasure and Wheeler with seven each.

Game three went to Neoga over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 51-26. Neoga took the quick 15-2 lead and outscored CHBC 28-13 over the next two quarters.

Neoga was led by Johnson with 18 and Vaughn with 12. CHBC was led by Schlanser with eight.

Altamont beat Dieterich 55-46. Altamont took a 26-23 halftime lead then had a 14-7 third period run and held off a final quarter run by Dieterich.

Cripe tallied 19 and Abendroth 18 in the one-two scoring punch for the winners. Dieterich was led by Kuhl with 12.

At Greenville

Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony both picked up victories in the 69th Annual James Burke Memorial Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

The Bullpups opened with a 45-36 win over Troy Triad. St. Anthony pushed into a 24-13 halftime lead then had to hold off Triad in the second half.

The Bullpups were led by Antrim with 24 points and Walsh with 10. St. Anthony improves to 12-5.

Salem then downed Roxana 45-26 and Greenville won over Aviston 38-35.

In the final game, Effingham pounded Hillsboro 51-17. The Mustangs took a 24-10 halftime lead then had a 27-7 second half.

Wolfe tallied 14 for the Mustangs and had eight rebounds. N. Thompson had four steals and Briggerman five rebounds.

The Mustangs are now 11-6 on the season.

St. Anthony will now take on Salem at 6 p.m. Thursday and Effingham faces Greenville at 7 p.m. in winner bracket play. Tonight's games have Troy Triad against Roxana at 6 p.m. and Aviston taking on Hillsboro at 7 p.m. in consolation bracket action.

At Monticello

Teutopolis Junior High School claimed two victories over host Monticello Monday evening.

T-town won the seventh-grade encounter 34-24. The Shoes held a 22-16 halftime lead. Bushur tallied 15 to lead the Shoes while M. Althoff scored nine.

In eighth-grade action, T-town won easily 58-17. The Shoes stepped out to a 25-5 opening quarter lead and never looked back. M. Deters scored 20, J. Hardiek 15 and Addis 11.

At Monticello

At Newton

Newton St. Thomas and Hutsonville split victories Monday evening.

St. Thomas claimed the seventh-grade game 31-27. Hutsonville took the eighth-grade contest 42-24.
