Wooden Shoes Win Big, Make School History at Highland Girls Tourney

HIGHLAND -- Teutopolis High School easily picked up its first victory at the 31st Annual Scott Credit Union Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Monday and made school history.

The Wooden Shoes beat Trenton Wesclin 74-31. T-town stepped out to a 19-8 opening quarter lead and led 39-18 at halftime.

T-town had a big scoring third period with a 25-6 run.

Three players scored in double figures for the Shoes. Jolene Bueker led the way with 18 points while Jamie Sandschafer added 14 and Sadie Bueker 11. S. Bueker had two blocked shots. Leading in rebounding was J. Bueker with nine and S. Bueker with six. J. Bueker had three steals.

The victory was the 1,000th win in the program's history. The Shoes are second in the state in overall wins behind Chicago Marshall. The T-town program began in the 1978-79 school year under the direction of Coach Wendy Hawickhorst. Other coaches in the program include Ben Wesselman, Dennis Koester and Laurie Thompson. The overall winning percentage in program history is .850.

The program will be recognized at the girls' Senior Night Monday, January 30.

In other games, Highland beat Carlyle 72-20, Belleville Althoff won over Hillsboro 82-73, O'Fallon downed Salem 68-32, Breese Mater Dei beat Taylorville 46-40, Okawville edged Troy Triad 45-38, Belleville West defeated Nokomis 58-34 and Breese Central downed Nashville 40-33.

In games tonight, Carlyle faces Hillsboro at 4 p.m. and Salem takes on Taylorville at 5:30 in consolation bracket action. In winner bracket action, Highland meets Belleville Althoff at 7 and O'Fallon takes on Breese Mater Dei at 8:30.

T-town will be back in action Wednesday against Okawville at 7 p.m.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Only one game was contested Monday evening in the Little Illini Conference Tournament.

Lawrenceville picked up a 68-36 win over Red Hill (Bridgeport) in consolation bracket action.

Lawrenceville now faces Robinson Wednesday at 6 p.m.

In Tuesday games, Paris meets Olney at 6 and Newton takes on Marshall at 7:30.
