Good All-Around Performance Powers Hearts to Win

The Effingham Hearts produced a good all-around performance in winning their first game in the annual Effingham Girls Round-Robin Tournament Monday. Effingham defeated Greenville 53-32 in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com. 

Effingham produced a balanced offense with six players scoring between six and 11 points, while their stingy defense allowed just 12 points in the second half.

The Hearts led at all the stops; 12-7 after one quarter, 29-20 at halftime, 43-24 after three quarters, and then outscored the Comets 10-8 in the final quarter to post the 21-point win. Effingham led by as many as 24 points.

Effingham made 46% of its shots, 19 of 41, including two of seven threes. The Hearts made 13 of 15 foul shots, turned the ball over 14 times and pulled down 20 rebounds.

Greenville made 13 of 36 shots, 36%, including one of six threes. The Comets made four of eight free throws, committed 22 turnovers, and claimed 21 rebounds.

Balanced scoring was the name of the game for the Lady Hearts. Carsyn Fearday led with 11 points, Aly Armstrong scored 10 points, Miranda Fox and Skyler Schafer each scored nine points, Sidney Webster scored eight points, and Shelby Myers added six points. 

For Greenville: Nancy Fritzsche 11, Taylor Snow six, Kalie Meadows four, Ally Cantrill four, Megan Halleman three, Hannah Simpson two and Rylee Pickett two.

Effingham improved to 18-2 on the season, while Greenville fell to 12-8.

In other games at the tournament, Greenville edged Vandalia 49-44 in overtime, Pana downed Centralia 62-56 and Centralia won over Vandalia 61-38.
