Long, Fun Day at St. Anthony Shootout; Other Saturday Area Basketball Scores

Plenty of excitement was felt at the 2017 St. Anthony Shootout as both Teutopolis and St. Anthony's games went to the wire before the local schools emerged with victories. 

St. Anthony saw a 16-point lead evaporate before they came back to defeat De La Salette Academy, 59-51, while Evergreen Park mounted a big comeback before Teutopolis prevailed 74-69. Both games were heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com. Also Saturday in games broadcast from the Shootout, Casey-Westfield pulled away late to defeat Dieterich 65-49, and Newton won a close-throughout game over Windsor/Stew-Stras, 55-50. In the other Shootout contest, Decatur Eisenhower defeated Lawrenceville, 70-49.

ST. ANTHONY 59, DE LA SALETTE 51

The Lions of De La Salette Academy put up quite a fight with the Bulldogs early, trailing just 10-8 after one quarter. St. Anthony was up 29-20 at halftime and extended the lead to 16 before De La Salette began their comeback. The Bulldog lead was down to one before Jack Nuxoll hit a three at the third quarter buzzer to extend the advantage to 39-35. St. Anthony eventually outscored the Lions 20-16 in the fourth quarter to post the eight-point win.

Jack Nuxoll came off the bench to lead St. Anthony with 19 points. Drew Gibson scored 16 points and Alex Deters 13 points. Also for the Bulldogs: Cade Walsh 7 and Alex Beesley 4. 

St. Anthony hit 21 of 48 shots including 7 of 14 threes, made 10 of 15 foul shots, committed a whopping 20 turnovers and grabbed 28 rebounds. The Bulldogs improved to 16-1 on the season. Joel Adese was huge for De La Salette with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

TEUTOPOLIS 74, EVERGREEN PARK 69

It was anybody's game after one quarter as Evergreen Park led 21-20, but the Shoes outscored the Mustangs 20-6 in the second quarter to lead 40-27 at halftime. A 21-21 third quarter left it 61-48 T-Town, but a big fourth quarter comeback made it exciting. The Mustangs outscored the Shoes 21-13 in the period, but Teutopolis prevailed by five points.

The Shoes made 30 of 61 shots including 5 of 15 threes, hit just nine of 16 free throws, turned the ball over 16 times (12 in the second half), and grabbed 23 rebounds.

Mitch Hardiek led Teutopolis with 22 points, while Brant Bueker added 15 points and Brock Bueker 11 points. Also for the Shoes: Lane Belleville 8, Chris Ungrund 7, Lee Hardiek 6, Eric Kremer 4, and Blake Mette 1. 

Teutopolis improved to 14-1 on the season. Evergreen Park, who had four players in double figures in scoring, is now 10-6 on the campaign.

CASEY-WESTFIELD 65, DIETERICH 49

Dieterich got out of the gate well in this one, leading 14-11 after one quarter, but Casey-Westfield was within 29-28 at halftime and held a 42-37 lead after three quarters. The Warriors outscored the Movin Maroons 23-12 in the fourth quarter to account for the final score.

Ryan Radloff with 19 points and Callaway Campton with 18 points led the Dieterich attack. Also for Dieterich: Tyler Higgs 8, Clayton Mellendorf 2, and Devin Flach 2. Luke Richards led a balanced Casey-Westfield attack with 20 points, one of four players in double figures.

Dieterich made 22 of 49 shots inlcuding 3 of 10 threes. They made both of just two foul shots for the entire game, turned the ball over 14 times, and pulled down 23 rebounds.

Dieterich fell to 6-10 on the season, Casey-Westfield improved to 7-8 on the campaign.

NEWTON 55, WINDSOR/STEW-STRAS 50

Newton led start-to-finish, but the Hatchets kept it close. The largest lead Newton held was 13 points, W/SS got as close as one point in the second half before Newton posted the five-point win.

Newton led 15-9 after one quarter, 34-23 at the half, and 41-36 after three quarters. Each team scored 14 points in the fourth quarter.

Windsor/Stew-Stras made 21 of 51 shots including 5 of 13 threes, hit 3 of 9 foul shots, committed 14 turnovers and pulled down 31 rebounds. Newton made 20 of 41 shots including 3 of 11 threes, made 12 of 18 foul shots, turned the ball over 12 times and grabbed 19 rebounds.

Nick Cohorst led Newton with 16 points while Joe Stone scored 15 points. Also for the Eagles: Tim Weber 7, Ben Carr 5, Zach Jansen 4, Collin Harris 4, Noah Wagy 2, and Michael Koebele 2. Nic Hutchinson led W/SS with 15 points, Isaac Kramer scored 12 points, Chase Thies 11 points, and Christian Kessler 10 points. Josh Overbeck added 2 points.

Newton improved to 9-6 with the win, while Windsor/Stew-Stras slipped to that same 9-6 record.
