Effingham Elks Hoop Shoot Winners Advance

The annual Effingham Elks Hoop Shoot was held December 10 at Effingham High School and drew 74 contestants.

There were 39 boys and 35 girls participating in three age divisions, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Trophies were awarded to the first, second and third place fnishers.

The top three finishers from each division were:

Boys 12-13 -- 1st: Colin Kinkelaar, the son of Jeremy and Kelli Kinkelaar (Stewardson), 22 of 25; 2nd: Ivan Wernsing, the son of Ken and Dana Wernsing (Teutopolis), 18 of 25; 3rd: Brennyn Abendroth (Altamont), 17 of 25

Girls 12-13 -- 1st: Kadyn Dunn, the daughter of Brian and Laura Dunn (Neoga), 17 of 25; 2nd: Grace Karolewicz, the daughter of Steve and Lisa Karolewicz (Effingham) 16 of 25

Boys 10-11 -- 1st: Caden Nichols, the son of John and Amber Nadler (Newton), 18 of 25, 4 of 5 in shoot-off; 2nd: Braxton Lewis, the son of Rob and Stacey Lewis (Effingham), 18 of 25, 2 of 5 in shoot-off; 3rd: Quintin Richards (Neoga), 15 of 25

Girls 10-11 -- 1st: Stacie Vonderheide, the daughter of Brock and Jamie Vonderheide, 13 of 25; 2nd: Elle Kinkelaar, the daughter of Jeremy and Kelli Kinkelaar (Stewardson), 12 of 25; 3rd: Grace Nelson (Altamont), 10 of 25

Boys 8-9 -- 1st: Brady Clark, the son of Douglas and Jamie Clark (Newton), 17 of 25; 2nd: Isaac Lankow, the son of Jon and  Shari Lankow (Stewardson), 16 of 25; 3rd: Colin Habing (Teutopolis), 15 of 25

Girls 8-9 -- 1st: Averie Wolfe, the daughter of David and Angie Wolfe (Effingham), 17 of 25, 4 of 5 in shoot-off; 2nd: Tinley  Schwerdt, the daughter of Larry and Alicia Schwerdt (Teutopolis), 17 of 25, 3 of 5 in shoot-off; 3rd: Megan Miller (Newton), 16 of 25

The six first place winners will advance to the East Central District Hoop Shoot scheduled for Sunday, January 8 at Pana High School. Registration and check-in will start promptly at 12:30 p.m. and the contest will begin at 1 p.m.

The 25th annual Doris (Carie) Zerrusen plaque was awarded to Kadyn Dunn for making the most free throws of the 35 girls participating. Zerrusen was the National Elks Hoop Shoot winner in 1982.

The 11th annual Taylor Worman plaque was awarded to Colin Kinkelaar for making the most free throws of the 39 boys participating. Worman was the National Elks Hoop Shoot winner in 2004.
