CHARLESTON -- Effingham High School captured two victories at the Charleston Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Wednesday then picked up an early win Thursday and will be playing for the championship today at 7 p.m.

The Hearts beat Decatur Eisenhower in a morning contest Wednesday then came back with a 70-43 win over Urbana in the afternoon.

EHS took a 32-14 halftime lead over Eisenhower and had a 24-5 third quarter run. Carsyn Fearday tallied 16 points while Natalie Carie chipped in with 12.

In the second contest, the Hearts beat Urbana with a 24-8 third quarter surge. EHS led 29-22 at halftime then went on a tear in the second half.

"What a performance tonight, the kids were awesome," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Shelby Meyrs really set the tone early with her rebounding. Carsyn had two quick fouls and sat most of the first half and Natalie came right in and scored two quick baskets. This was just a great team win. Everyone contributed. We had only seven turnovers against their press and we shared the ball and made great decisions."

Fearday led the Hearts with 23 points, 21 coming in the second half.

"Miranda Fox did an excellent job taking care of the ball and especially stopping the Cross girl. Aly, Carsyn, Briann, Sidney, Skyler and Natalie all rotated on Scott and we held her without a three. I doubt she has played a game lately without a three. She is an incredible shooter. I just can't say how proud I am of their effort oday. They came out focused and really executed and played a great game."

In other games, Paris defeated Urbana 74-67, Danville won over Charleston 56-50, Pekin downed Centennial 59-46, Paris won over Rantoul 47-24, Danville beat Centennial 52-36 and Charleston edged Canton 52-50.

The tournament comes to a close today. In the early morning, Effingham beat Rantoul to advance to the title contest.
