T-town Nabs Two Wins at Effingham/T-town Classic

Teutopolis High School was the lone area team to pick up two victories in opening round play at the Effingham/Teutopolis Boys Christmas Basketball Classic Tuesday.

The Wooden Shoes defeated Mattoon 84-55 and came back for an evening victory over Altamont 101-60.

T-town stepped out to a 28-18 opening quarter lead against Mattoon and held a 51-30 halftime tally. The Shoes didn't relent, taking a 24-17 third quarter advantage.

Mitch Hardiek tallied 32 points on 12 field goals including three trifectas and four of four at the line. Also in double figures was Brant Bueker with 19.

The Wooden Shoes then pounded Altamont 101-60. T-town edged out to a 26-20 opening quarter lead and led 54-33 at halftime. The Shoes then had a 47-27 second half surge.

Four players scored in double figures. Hardiek led the way with 21 points while Bra. Bueker tallied 17, Lucas Deters 12 and Chris Ungrund 12.

Altamont was led by Mitchell Stevenson and Ryan Armstrong with 17 each.

Effingham split victories, downing Madison 78-47 then falling in a close 69-64 contest against Chicago Brooks Academy.

The Hearts ripped out to a 22-9 opening quarter lead and went up 44-24 at halftime against Madison. Jacob Donaldson tallied 27 points while Grant Wolfe added 20. Landon Wolfe chipped in with 11.

The Hearts then lost to Chicago Brooks Academy. EHS held a 20-14 opening quarter lead and Brent Beals knocked down two three-pointers. But Brooks Academy got going with a 21-12 run to lead 35-32 at halftime.

The Hearts came back with a 15-13 third quarter to pull within 48-47 going into the final period. Brooks then outscored the Hearts 21-17 in the final period to pull out the five-point victory.

EHS was led by Donaldson and Beals with 16 points each while G. Wolfe added 15.

Altamont lost to Oaklawn 61-49. Oaklawn held a 25-21 halftime lead then went ahead 42-36 going into the final period.

Altamont was led by Sam Childerson with 20 points, Stevenson with 15 and Armstrong with 10.

In other scores, Charleston beat Madison 44-35, Chicago Brooks downed Academy of Law 74-64, Lincolnway East beat Mattoon 76-46, Lincolnway East then defeated Oaklawn 76-46 and Academy of Law beat Charleston 69-57.

The tournament continues today with six games at Teutopolis and four games at Effingham. Five games will be broadcast today, Effingham vs. Charleston at 11:30 a.m., Oaklawn vs. Teutopolis at 1 p.m., Altamont vs. Mattoon at 5, Effingham vs. Academy of Law at 6:30 and Teutopolis vs. Lincolnway East at 8.
