Wooden Shoes Down Hearts, 83-74

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes took an early lead and turned it into an 83-74 win over the Effingham Hearts Tuesday night. The game at J.H. Griffin Gym was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Teutopolis took a 6-0 lead and were never headed. The Hearts came back to tie the game at one point in the third quarter, but Teutopolis immediately scored six straight point and regained the momentum.

Teutopolis had several heroes in the contest. Brant Bueker scored early, posting nine points in the first quarter to help set the early tempo. Mitch Hardiek scored seven in that same period as the Shoes held a 21-16 lead after one quarter. It was Lane Belleville's turn in the second quarter, scoring six points to help the Shoes lead 36-30 at halftime.

Mitch Hardiek was the spark in the third quarter, scoring nine points, and then Belleville came back with nine points in the fourth quarter to help make the difference. Mitch Hardiek led Teutopolis with 18 points, while Brant Bueker scored 17, Belleville scored 15 and Chris Ungrund scored 10. Also for Teutopolis: Lee Hardiek 8, Brock Bueker 7, Blake Mette 6, and Landon Jansen 2.

Effingham scored 74 points with only four players scoring. Grant Wolfe, who was guarded well by Ungrund, still scored 25 points for the Hearts. Landon Wolfe scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds including five offensive boards. Grant Wolfe and Landon Wolfe each had four assists. Jacob Donaldson, held to four points in the first half, broke out and scored 16 after intermission to finish with 20 points. The only other Hearts player to score was Brent Beals, who scored nine points on three threes while registering a team-leading five assists.

Teutopolis made 30 of 54 shots for 56% including 7 of 16 threes. The Shoes made 16 of 18 from the line, turned the ball over 15 times but just five in the second half, and grabbed 33 rebounds.

Effingham made 27 of 58 shots for 47% including 9 of 21 threes. The Hearts made all 11 of their foul shots, turned the ball over 11 times and grabbed 21 rebounds.

Teutopolis improved to 6-1 on the season, the same record as Effingham who loses for the first time this season.

Teutopolis won the JV game 60-34. Clint Weber led the T-Town JV with 17 points while Dawson Smith and Lee Hardiek each scored 11 points. Ryan Sandifer led Effingham with eight points while Lucas Hagler scored six.
