SIGEL -- Sigel St. Michael claimed the championship of the National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

The Sharpshooters defeated Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 48-32 for the crown.

Neoga downed Stewardson-Strasburg 32-29 for third place. Stew-Stras took a 15-12 first half lead. Neoga came back with a 20-14 second half to pull out the victory.

Neoga was led by Titus with 14 points and McClure with 10.

Stew-Stras was led by Wernsing with 14 points as the squad dropped to 8-7.

At Mattoon

Effingham split victories with Mattoon Thursday evening.

Mattoon claimed the seventh-grade game 47-29. Mattoon had a 16-9 second period and a 12-5 final quarter.

Matteson tallied nine to lead the Mustangs who dropped to 2-10.

In the eighth-grade game, Effingham was a 48-25 winner.

Parker Wolfe tallied 16 and Tristin Duncan 13 for the Mustangs who improved to 9-3.

Effingham took a 22-7 opening quarter lead and that was the game.

At St. Anthony

St. Anthony handed Charleston two losses Thursday evening.

In the seventh-grade game, the Bullpups picked up a 36-31 victory. Charleston led 13-11 at halftime but St. Anthony outscored Charleston 14-6 in the third period.

The Bullpups were led by Josh Blanchette with 12 points while Kyle Stewart had nine. The Bullpups are now 9-3 on the season.

In the eighth-grade contest, Charleston picked up a 41-33 win. Charleston held a 13-11 opening quarter then had a 12-2 second period run. St. Anthony came back with a 20-16 second half but couldn't overcome that second period surge.

The Bullpups were led by Walsh with 17. St. Anthony drops to 8-2 on the season.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis picked up a seventh-grade win over Taylorville, 40-34 Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes held a 28-23 hafltime lead. Two players finished in double figures. M. Althoff tallied 11 and Bushur 10.

At Newton

Olney picked up two wins over Jasper County in action Thursday evening.

Olney won the seventh-grade game 42-40 in overtime. Olney led 22-15 at halftime. Jasper County came back with an 18-11 second half to knot the score at 33-33 sending the game into overtime. Olney then had a 9-7 edge.

Jasper County was led by Schafer with 16 points as the squad dropped to 7-5.

In eighth-grade play, Olney easily won 61-15. Martin led Jasper County with five points. The team dropped to 0-12.

Altamont Lutheran claimed two victories over Newton St. Thomas.

Altamont Lutheran won the seventh-grade game 35-30 and captured the eighth-grade contest 74-22.
