Altamont, Sigel St. Michael Advance to Girls State Tourney

Sigel St. Michael and Altamont advanced to state basketball action after winning sectionals in Class 8A action Wednesday evening.

Class 8-2A Effingham St. Anthony Sectional

Altamont Junior High School claimed the championship of the St. Anthony Sectional Wednesday evening.

Altamont edged Stewardson-Strasburg 24-22. Altamont stepped out to an 11-4 opening quarter lead and led 17-8 at halftime. Stew-Stras came back with a 14-7 second half run but couldn't make up that first quarter deficit.

Runge tallied 16 to lead Altamont. Stew-Stras was led by Hannah Hayes with 10 points. The squad finished the season with an 18-6 record.

Altamont improved to 25-0 on the season and will head to the Class 8-1A State Tournament Saturday and will take on Arcola (19-5) at 11:30 a.m. The State Tournament will be held at Lewistown High School. The winner advances to a 5 p.m. contest while the loser exits the tourney.

Class 8-1A Sigel St. Michael Sectional

Sigel St. Michael won its own sectional. The Sharpshooters easily defeated Pana Sacred Heart 38-9.

St. Michael advances to the Class 8-1A State Tournament at Clinton Junior High School Saturday with a 19-4 record. The Sharpshooters will face Carthage, a 32-12 winner over Carrollton St. John in the Jacksonville Our Savior Sectional. Carthage has a 23-0 record.

The winner advances to a 5 p.m. game while the loser exits the tourney.

 

Class 8-3A Cumberland Sectional

Teutopolis saw its hopes of a state tournament berth go by the wayside with a 27-18 loss to Paris Mayo in the Cumberland Sectional championship game.

Paris Mayo took a 9-2 opening quarter lead and led 13-8 at halftime. Paris Mayo continued on with a 14-10 second half.

T-town was led by Carly Michels with 10 points. The Wooden Shoes end the season with a 14-11 record.
