Cumberland Claims Own Boys Tourney Title

TOLEDO -- Cumberland High School edged Charleston 68-66 to win its own Cumberland Boys Basketball Turkey Tournament Saturday.

The Pirates edged Charleston 68-66. Cumberland took a 20-14 first quarter lead and led 35-29 at halftime. Charleston came roaring back with a 24-13 third period run to lead 53-48 going into the final quarter. Cumberland then connected on seven field goals and five free throws for the victory.

Tyson Magee hit 13 field goals, including one three-pointer, and was 10 of 15 at the line for 37 points to lead the Pirates. Zach and Mike Wolke scored nine points each.

In the third place game, Oblong edged Altamont 65-64. Altamont led 17-14 after the opening quarter but Oblong came back to take a 38-32 halftime lead.

The Indians rallied to pull ahead 49-45 going into the final quarter on Ryan Armstrong's nine points. But Oblong rallied, knocking in two three-pointers and connecting on six of 10 free throws to pull out the one-point win.

Altamont was led by Mitchell Stevenson with 21 points, Armstrong with 20 and Sam Childerson with 11.

In the fifth place contest, Newton was a 55-42 winner over Casey-Westfield. The Eagles held a 28-23 halftime lead then had a 27-19 second half run.

The Eagles had three players hit double digits. Nicholas Cohorst tallied 22 while Joe Stone had 10 and Zach Jansen added 10.

In the seventh-place game, Dieterich won over Neoga 65-51. Dieterich stepped out to an 18-8 opening quarter lead and led 36-18 at halftime and 49-34 going into the final quarter.

Callaway Campton tallied 26 to lead the Movin' Maroons while Ryan Radloff scored 16 and Tyler Higgs 16.

Neoga was led by Caleb Hill with 12 and Evan Fritcher with 10.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Sam Childerson (Altamont), Blaze Taylor-Lutz (Charleston), Ryan Armstrong (Altamont), Dawson Maus (Oblong), Callaway Campton (Dieterich), Zach Wolke (Cumberland), Luke Richards (Casey-Westfield), Joe Stone (Newton) and Nicholas Cohorst (Newton). The Most Valuable Player Award went to Tyson Magee (Cumberland).
