NEWTON -- Effingham High School claimed a 64-36 win over Altamont at the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

The Hearts moved ahead 22-15 in the first quarter and pushed that lead to 43-26 at halftime. The Hearts had a 21-8 third period.

Four players hit double figures as Carsyn Fearday scored 13, Miranda Fox 12, Natalie Carie 10 and Shelby Myers 10.

"The kids did a great job tonight," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Their intensity was excellent. I don't know when the last time we had three 20-point quarters. Altamont played hard. Katie does an excellent job with them and they will be a team you won't want to play a month from now.

"We continued our great balance. Natalie had a great first half, Shelby had a nice game on her birthday, Carsyn and Miranda played excellent. Miranda was everywhere and Carsyn did a great job finding different ways to score. Bria had her best game this year. Sidney and Skyler gave us great minutes and kept a lot of plays alive. This was a good win tonight. I'm really proud of their effort and the way we bounced back defensively in the last three quarters."

In the second game, Newton claimed a 42-33 win over Flora. The Eagles held a 19-17 halftime lead then had a 23-16 second half.

Hartrich tallied 17 points for the Eagles to lead the way. Frohning scored eight points, had 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals.

"Cohorst did not score, but did an amazing job on defense against Krutsinger in the second half," said Newton Coach Brad Harris.

Effingham and Newton are now 2-0 while Altamont is 0-1,  Cumberland 0-1 and Flora 0-2.

The tournament continues with three games tonight featuring Altamont against Flora at 5, Newton taking on Effingham at 6:30 and Cumberland against Altamont at 8.
