EIU Women Drop Decision to Stetson

Eastern Illinois women's basketball fell to Stetson 72-55 Saturday evening after the Hatters jumped out to a 22-8 lead in the first quarter. With the loss EIU is now 2-2 on the year while Stetson remains undefeated at 4-0.

Erica Brown nearly earned a double-double finishing the game with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Freshman Allison Van Dyke earned her fourth game in a row scoring in double-figures tying her career high with 15 points.

The Panthers tied their season high with 14 steals against the Hatters. Both Danielle Berry and Van Dyke led the team recording four steals in the game.

Stetson could not seem to miss in the early goings of the game going 6-for-6 to build a 15-2 lead early in the first quarter. SU did not miss a shot until the 6:09 mark. Van Dyke finally broke the Stetson run to open the game with a steal followed by a layup to make it 17-4 with 3:43 left in the quarter.

The layup from Van Dyke sparked a 6-0 run from EIU as the first quarter came to a close with Stetson leading 22-8.

Zharia Lenoir opened the second period with a three-pointer as EIU went on a 7-2 run early in the quarter. A jumper from Halle Stull brought EIU within 10 making it 24-15 with 8:29 left in the half, but Stetson answered with a 10-0 run to push their lead to 34-15 with 5:01 left in the half.

EIU was able to close the gap as the first half came to a close with Stetson leading 37-23 as both teams scored 15 points in the second quarter.

Both teams finished the first half shooting 41 percent as Stetson cooled off in the second period.

The Panthers had only one three-pointer in the first half compared to Stetson who were 5-11 from beyond the arc.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair as EIU tried to claw back into the game, but Stetson was able to answer every Panther run to maintain a 15 point lead throughout the rest of the game.

SU had two players finish the game with 20 points in Breana Bey and Brianti Saunders as both Bey and Sarah Sagerer earned double-doubles.

Lenoir finished the game with seven points, three rebounds, and three assists.

The Panthers continue their Florida road trip at Florida A&M Tuesday at 6 pm.
