Effingham St. Anthony High School came up with a big defensive effort in a 60-18 victory over Dieterich Tuesday in girls basketball action.

The Bulldogs stepped out to a 14-3 opening quarter lead as Abby Weis tallied seven, connecting on a three-pointer. The lead was pushed to 35-6 at halftime.

Weis finished with 16 points while Olivia Clausius scored 14 and Abbie Schmidt 10.

"We had a great defensive effort," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "When you force 30-plus turnovers, you are doing something right, but we need to take better care of the ball ourselves."

Clausius had six steals and Weis had five. Weis and Meg Richards led in assists with three each. Schmidt had eight rebounds.

Dieterich was led by Gracie Britton with 10 points. Britton had four steals. Jennifer Robards and Kaitlyn Bloemer had four rebounds each.

In a junior varsity contest, Teutopolis won over St. Anthony 59-32. Dieterich did not have enough players for a junior varsity game so Teutopolis came over to compete against the Bulldogs.
