Sacred Heart, Stew-Stras, Brownstown Win In NTC Tourney

DIETERICH -- Effingham Sacred Heart, Stewardson-Strasburg and Brownstown all claimed opening round victories in the National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday evening.

Sacred Heart won the opening game over Neoga 22-8. The Shamrocks led 10-6 at halftime then had a 12-2 second half run. Carie tallied six to lead the winners. Atwell led Neoga with four.

In the second contest, Stewardson-Strasburg edged Dieterich 15-13. Stew-Stras took an 11-6 opening half lead. Dieterich came back with a 7-4 second half run but fell short. M. Schlechte led the winners with seven points. Garbe led Dieterich with six.

In the final contest of the evening, Brownstown claimed a 33-3 win over Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick. Deana Shelton tallied 12 for the winners. Oldham scored two for BCCH.

Tournament action continues tonight as Dieterich faces BCCH at 5:30 p.m. in consolation bracket play followed by Altamont meeting Sacred Heart at 6:45 in winner bracket play and Stew-Stras taking on Brownstown at 8, also in winner bracket action.

At Palestine

Jasper County handed Palestine two losses in action Thursday evening.

Jasper County won the seventh-grade encounter 38-7. Abby Frohning tallied 17 for the winners.

In eighth-grade play, Jasper County was a 43-24 winner. Ariel Richards had 17, Grace Hartrich 10 and Madison Easley 10.
