CARBONDALE -- Teutopolis High School trailed by only a point after the opening quarter against Breese Central in the Class 2A Carbondale Boys Basketball Super-Sectional Tuesday evening at Southern Illinois University. But the Cougars began putting things together and finished out the evening with a 67-52 victory.

"We didn't play the best in that opening quarter," said T-town's Jason Hanson. "But we pulled back within a point."

Breese Central knocked down three trifectas in the opening period and held a six point lead with just over a minute to play. But Mitch Hardiek nailed a three-pointer and Michael Drees got off a final second shot at the buzzer to pull the Shoes within 15-14. Mette scored eight of the Shoes' 14 points.

The Cougars pushed ahead 19-15 in the second period and once again were hot from three-point range, picking up another three.  Logan Kohrmann started the run with a trifecta before Mitchel Rule and Jack Strieker nailed back-to-back trifectas and the Cougars held a big 13-point lead at the half 32-19.

T-town connected on only two baskets in 11 shots with Brett Mette putting on both of those baskets.

"It bothered me that we weren't boxing out," said Hanson. "They were getting the offensive boards and then they hit some threes and we were rushing and couldn't connect."

But the Shoes rallied in the third quarter and had a slight 8-5 edge to trail 37-27 going into the final quarter. Hardiek nailed three baskets in the period.

T-town cut the deficit to eight in the final quarter but the Cougars were having none of that rally and went on a run to push the lead back into the safety column. Central connected on 16 free throws and again knocked in two three-point shots.

The Wooden Shoes had three players in double figures with Hardiek and Brett Mette scoring 14 each and Devin Smith chipping in with 10. Mette and Kyle Smith pulled down six rebounds each.

T-town connected on only 19 of 51 shots for 37.2 percent from the field and were 71.4 percent at the line with 10 of 14.

Breese Central was led by Kohrmann with 22 points while Jack Strieker chipped in with 12. Kolby Schulte and Mitchel Rule were just off the double figure mark by one with nine points each.

The Cougars hit 47.5 percent from the field and 76.9 percent at the line with 20 of 26, 16 of 20 coming in the final quarter. They connected on nine of 19 three-pointers for 47.3 percent.

Teutopolis finishes the season with a 26-7 record.

Breese Central advances to the Class 2A State Tournament with a 30-4 mark. The Cougars will face St. Joseph-Ogden, a 56-43 winner over Pleasant Plains at the Springfield Super-Sectional.

In other games, Taylor Ridge Rockridge defeated Aurora Christian 51-40 to win the DeKalb Super-Sectional while Chicago Hales Franciscan won the Joliet Central Super-Sectional with a 62-58 win over Chicago Orr.

Breese Central will now meet St. Joseph-Ogden at 6:30 p.m. Friday while Chicago Hales will take on Taylor Ridge Rockridge at 8:15 p.m. The winners advance to the state championship Saturday at 8:15 while the losers meet for third place at 6:30.
