Teutopolis High School advanced to the championship game of the Class 2A Pana Girls Basketball Sectional with a 51-21 win Monday over the Lawrenceville Indians. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

Teutopolis controlled their game from the outset and led 15-4 after the first quarter, 24-12 at halftime, and 38-18 after three quarters before outscoring Tuscola 13-3 in the final quarter to post the 30-point win.

Teutopolis made 17 of 33 shots from the field, better than 50%, and made 13 of 14 free throws. Meanwhile, the Shoes held Lawrenceville to eight of 26 shooting on the night. The Shoes turned the ball over just six times in the game and grabbed 14 rebounds. Lawrenceville pulled down 19 rebounds, but turned the ball over 20 times.

Lawrenceville finished 21-11 on the season.

"We worked all week on guarding their two big players inside," said T-town Coach Laurie Thompson. "We dida good job helping on those two kids. We executed well on what we practiced. Our press caused turnovers.

"Offensively we went to the basket lokoing to attack. We had good shot selection. We worked on ball control and got what we wanted. We missed some layups and our rebounding was weak early. But, other than that, I thought we played smart. As a matter of fact I gave the girls Smarties on the bus coming here to remind them to play smart and it worked."

Effingham, now 20-10, will take on Bethalto Civic Memorial Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. as action continues at the Salem Regional. In the other game Monday night at Salem, Mount Vernon defeated Centralia 47-40, with Mount Vernon taking on Salem Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Schafer said, "I was very proud of our girls and how they handled that missed defensive assignment on that last play and put it behind them and came right out and outscored them 8-0 in the overtime."

Aly Armstrong led Effingham with 17 points, while Miranda Fox added 13 points. Also for Effingham: Carsyn Fearday 9, Shelby Myers 9, and Marranda Steffen 3.
