Hearts Win at Newton, 70-44

The Effingham Hearts stretched their winning streak to four games Tuesday night with a 70-46 win in Newton over the Eagles.

The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com 

Effingham took an early lead, but Newton hit some threes to pull in front 15-14. Jacob Donaldson then got a slam dunk to put the Hearts back in front 16-15 and Effingham was never again headed. Effingham led 33-24 at halftime and 48-36 after three quarters before outscoring the Eagles 22-10 in the final stanza.

Effingham shot well from the field, making 28 of 51 for 55% including four of 11 threes. The Hearts also made 10 of 11 foul shots, and overcame 15 turnovers with 30 rebounds. Newton finished 38% from the field, 16 of 45, including 6 of 18 on threes. The Eagles made just four of 11 foul shots, committed 22 turnovers and pulled down 22 rebounds.

Sean Zerrusen led Effingham in scoring with 18 points, missing his first two shots, but making his final eight shots including two threes. Grant Wolfe scored 15 points, Reed Schafer scored 11 points, and Jacob Donaldson scored 10 points including the dunk. Also for Effingham: Jared Minor 4, Brent Beals 3, Alex Webb 3, Brady Jackson 2, Michael Woltman 2, and Mason Hull 2.

Nick Cohorst scored 11 points to lead Newton, while Brock Mammoser scored 10. Also for the Eagles: Joe Stone 8, Tim Weber 4, Michael Koebele 4, Mitch Jansen 3, Nate Meinhart 2, and Zach Jansen 2.

The Hearts improved to 14-6 on the season, while Newton dropped to 7-15.

Effingham won the JV game 59-46. Brent Beals scored 22 points for the JV Hearts, Landon Wolfe 17 and Mason Hull 10. Noah Wagy led the JV Eagles with 12 points, and Michael Koebele scored 10.
