Effingham Junior High School's eighth-grade basketball team saw its season come to an end in the Class 8-4A Mattoon Regional Monday evening.

The Mustangs fell behind 15-8 in the opening quarter and trailed 26-18 at halftime. Effingham then came back with a 17-8 third quarter run to take a 35-34 lead going into the final period.

The Mustangs were within a point when a Charleston player connected on a free throw for a 44-42 final. Charleston is 21-0 on the season.

Pemberton tallied 11 and Shackelford 10 for the Mustangs who end the season at 8-14.

Mattoon claimed the second game with a 41-37 win over Urbana. Mattoon and Charleston will now meet for the regional championship Thursday at 6 p.m.

Class 8-1A Stewardson-Strasburg Regional

Three opening round games were contested at the Stew-Stras Regional Monday evening.

In the opening contest, Pana Sacred Heart defeated  Windsor 42-19. Sacred Heart held a 23-11 halftime lead. Windsor was led by Domzalski with nine points.

Stewardson-Strasburg claimed the second game with a 24-17 win over Effingham Sacred Heart.

Stew-Stras edged ahead 8-7 at halftime then had a 9-1 third quarter run. Jesgarz tallied 13 for the winners.

Sacred Heart was led by Niehart with four.

In the final game, Sorento tallied a 28-24 win over Pocahontas.

The regional continues tonight with top-seeded Mulberry Grove against Pana Sacred Heart at 6 followed by Stew-Stras taking on Sorento at 7:15.

Class 8-1A Sigel St. Michael Regional

Dieterich claimed a 47-29 win over Newton St. Thomas in action at Sigel St. Michael Regional Monday evening.

Dieterich held a 21-16 halftime lead then pushed ahead 29-23 going into the final quarter.

The winners were led by Hall with 14 and Niebrugge with 11.

St. Thomas was led by Seth Weber with 21.

Sigel St. Michael easily defeated Hutsonville 48-21 in the second contest.

Dieterich will meet St. Michael at 6 p.m. today for the regional championship.

Class 8-2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional

Altamont advanced in the St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional with a 55-39 win over Findlay Okaw Valley.

Okaw Valley held a 17-14 first quarter lead and led 23-19 at halftime. Altamont came back from halftime and outscored Okaw Valley 17-3 and finished out strong for the win.

Gelsinger talliled 26 points, 20 in the second half, for Altamont. Delaney also was in double figures with 16.

In the opening game, Nokomis trounced St. Elmo/Brownstown 55-10.

Altamont will now meet Nokomis for the regional championship tonight at 6:30.

Class 8-3A Pana Regional

Teutopolis downed host Pana 41-32 in action Monday evening.

In the second contest, Assumption beat Arthur 49-30.

Teutopolis will now face Assumption Central A&M at 6 p.m. today for the regional championship.

 

Class 8-3A Marshall Regional

Marshall bounced Red Hill (Bridgeport) 46-15 in action at its own regional Monday evening.

In the second contest, Robinson Nuttall won over Lawrenceville Parkview 36-27.

Marshall and Robinson Nuttall meet for the regional championship at 6:30 p.m. today.

 

SJHSAA Altamont Lutheran Regional

Altamont Lutheran captured the championship of its own regional Monday evening.

Altamont Lutheran edged Odin 46-44. The winners now advance to Rend Lake College to meet Opdyke-Belle Rive at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in first round play.

In other games, Cairo takes on Adams School-Creal Springs at 10:45, OLMC Herrin meets Carrier Mills at noon, New Hope faces West Salem at 1:15 p.m., Valmeyer squares off against Summerville at 2:30, St. Libory meets All-Saints Breese at 3:45, St. John Chester takes on Central City at 5 and Woodlawn finishes out against Albers-Damiansville Co-op at 6:15.

The winners advance to the quarterfinals Monday.
