Teutopolis High School's defense stiffened in the second half and the Wooden Shoes went on to hand Effingham a 56-39  non-conference basketball loss in a rare Friday evening girls game.

The game was close in the opening quarter. T-town's Molly Smith knocked in the first basket of the contest but the Hearts came right back on a three-pointer by Carsyn Fearday. Shelby Myers connected for EHS and the Hearts led 5-4 but T-town put in back-to-back baskets by Shelby Thompson and Anna Hartke and the Shoes never trailed again.

Smith, a 5-foot-9 senior, was the catalyst for the Shoes as she didn't miss an opening quarter shot. Smith conencted on five of five baskets, including a three-pointer, for 11 of the Shoes points for a 19-13 opening quarter lead.

The Hearts played the Shoes close in the second period and trailed only 29-23 at halftime. EHS kept Smith from scoring in the second period but Hartke still had a couple of baskets.

Both teams were hitting well from the field as the Shoes went 11 of 18 by halftime and the Hearts were 10 of 18. But the second half was a different story for the EHS.

T-town ramped up its defense and EHS could muster only four of 10 shots in the third period and only one of 12 in the final quarter. EHS also committed seven second half turnovers while T-town took care of the ball and finished with nine for the contest.

"I was not pleased with our defensive effort in the first half," said T-town Coach Laurie Thompson. "Effingham was aggressive. We have to do a better job and we did stepping it up in the second half. Molly took over the scoring and put us on her back in the first half. Anna and Danielle Repking stepped up scoring and also on the defense."

Smith and Hartke finished with 13 points each while Repking added 12. Hartke led in rebounds with seven. The Shoes finished with 21 of 35 from the field and were 13 of 17 at the line.

The Shoes improved to 21-6 on the season and will head into the final stretch of the season at Breese Mater Dei Monday and then play Bloomington Central Catholic at Parkland College next Friday for the final regular season contest.

"I can't fault the girls," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We played aggressive taking the ball to the basket but we just have to take more shots. We tried to stay patient and I thought our guards did a great job handling their pressure. But the bottom line was the Smith girl was on fire and we couldn't stop her in that first quarter."

Only one Heart player finished in double figures. Fearday tallied 13 points. Bria Barr came off the bench to give a good performance with nine points as she went four of four from the field and one of two at the line. Fearday and Shelby Nunamaker led in rebounds with four each.

The Hearts drop to 17-9  on the season and will be back in action with a tough game next Thursday at Salem in Apollo Conference play.
