GREENVILLE -- Effingham St. Anthony advanced to the championship game while Effingham dropped into the third place contest at the 68th Annual James Burke Memorial Junior High Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday.

The Bullpups edged Triad 49-43. St. Anthony took a 15-6 opening quarter lead and held a 22-18 halftime lead. Triad came back with an 18-10 third quarter to push ahead 36-32 going into the final period. St. Anthony then rallied with a 17-7 run.

Dust tallied 20 while Tingley and Hoene added 10 each for the Bullpups.

In the second game, Greenville claimed a 51-35 win over Effingham. The Mustangs fell behind 13-5 after the opening quarter and 30-12 at halftime.

The Mustangs came back in the second half with a 22-21 edge but couldn't overcome that first half. Kalber and Cramsey scored eight points each.

Effingham will face Triad at 6 p.m. for third place Saturday while St. Anthony takes on Greenville at 7 for the championship.

National Trail Eighth-Grade Tournament

Sigel St. Michael captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday.

St. Michael defeated Altamont 33-29.

In the third place game, Neoga won over St. Elmo/Brownstown 26-23.

The consolation title went to Stewardson-Strasburg over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 50-39. Stew-Stras held a 27-19 halftime lead then held off CHBC in the second half.

Kirby talleid 22 while Jesgarz scored 10 for the winenrs. CHBC was led by Brown and Burrus with eight each.

At Newton

Newton St. Thomas downed Clay City in both games.

St. Thomas won the seventh-grade contest 22-17. Schafer led the winners with 13 points.

The eighth-grade game went to St. Thomas over Clay City 47-22. Justin Zumbahlen scored 11 while Seth Weber and Will Ochs had eight each for the winners who improve to 15-2.

Jasper County picked up two victories over Hutsonville Thursday evening.

Jasper County won the seventh-grade contest 36-21. Evan Schafer tallied 10 points for the winners.

In eighth-grade action, Jasper County was a 42-28 winner. Jarrett Tharp scored 13 and Jerald Eckl 10.
