Teutopolis, St. Anthony Lose, Windsor/Stew-Stras, Dieterich Win at St. A. Shootout

The state's top-rated Class 2A boys basketball team, the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes, lost to Decatur Eisenhower 66-57 Saturday at the St. Anthony Shootout. 

Also, St. Anthony mounted a furious comeback, but lost to Edwardsville Metro East Lutheran 58-51, Windsor/Stew-Stras won over Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 47-37, and Dieterich won over Casey-Westfield 57-43.

In the other contests at the Shootout, Okaw Valley downed Clay City 77-30, Georgetown LaSalette won over Waltonville 59-44, and Lawrenceville pounded Troy Triad 76-49.

Here's a recap on the games involving area teams:

WINDSOR/STEW-STRAS 47 CENTRALIA CHRIST OUR ROCK LUTHERAN 37

The Hatchets trailed 2-0, but led the remainder of the game. They could never quite put away the Silver Stallions, though. 

WSS led 11-9 after one quarter and pushed the lead to 20-12 at halftime. A 12-8 scoring edge in the third quarter, though, brought CORL back to within 28-24 at the end of the period. The Hatchets outscored Christ Our Rock 19-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Windsor/Stew-Stras shot 49% from the field and just 52% from the line, committed 11 turnovers and pulled down 22 rebounds. Christ Our Rock was held to 27% shooting and committed 12 turnovers while grabbing 28 rebounds. Christ Our Rock made six of 25 threes while WSS made two of nine.

Tristan Warner led Windsor/Stew-Stras with 22 points, while Eli Palm and Tyler Fleeman each scored 12 to pace Christ Our Rock.

Windsor/Stew-Stras is back over .500 at 8-7, while CORL is 5-15.

DIETERICH 57, CASEY-WESTFIELD 43

The biggest play of this game was the decision by Dieterich senior Lance Niemerg to play the game despite the death of his mother, whose funeral was held Saturday morning.

The game was tied 13-13 after one quarter, but Dieterich was up 25-21 at halftime. The Maroons led 37-31 after three periods and outscored the Warriors 20-11 in the final stanza to win by 14.

Dieterich shot 46% from the field and just 56% from the line, committed 13 turnovers and pulled down 22 rebounds. Dieterich made six of 17 threes.

Casey-Westfield made 43% of its shots and just 50% from the line, with a whopping 27 turnovers and 24 rebounds while making just two of 12 threes.

Dieterich had three double-figure scorers. Nick Feldhake scored 18 points. Travis Niemerg scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked seven shots. Lance Niemerg totaled 11 points.

Corey Carver paced Casey-Westfield with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Dieterich improved to 12-5, while Casey-Westfield dropped to 3-9.

DECATUR EISENHOWER 66 TEUTOPOLIS 57

Eisenhower, a Class 3A school carrying a 5-8 record into the contest, used its quickness to neutralize some long-range bombing by the Wooden Shoes to post the win.

Eisenhower took the early lead, but Teutopolis came roaring back, capping the first quarter with a head of the key three by Devin Smith to take a 16-15 lead. The Shoes led by as many as 12 points before it was the Panthers' turn to mount a comeback, pulling to within 31-27 at halftime.

Eisenhower then continued its onslaught, scoring 23 points in the third quarter to lead 50-46 at the end of the period. Teutopolis fell behind by as many as nine points before cutting into the deficit, but never quite getting over the hump. Eisenhower outscored the Shoes 16-11 in the final quarter to secure the nine-point win.

Teutopolis shot 41% from the field, but made just two of seven at the line, committed 14 turnovers and grabbed 26 rebounds while hitting six of 17 threes.

Eisenhower made 55% of its shots and won despite making just 11 of 22 free throws, committing 13 turnovers and claiming 30 rebounds while making three of 11 threes.

Brett Mette and Mitch Hardiek each scored 13 points to lead Teutopolis. Stephon Bobbitt led Eisenhower with 23 points.

Eisenhower improved to 6-8 on the season, while Teutopolis fell to 13-2.

EDWARDSVILLE METRO EAST LUTHERAN 58, ST. ANTHONY 51

St. Anthony looked dead in the water in the first half, scoring just four points on only one basket in the second quarter, and trailed by as many as 18 points. 

Then came the third quarter.

St. Anthony finally got some shots to fall to pull to pare the deficit to 11, 41-30, at the end of the period. The Bulldogs continued to roll in the final quarter, eventually cutting the deficit to three and had the ball, but Metro East Lutheran got a couple of shots down to regain the momentum and win by seven.

St. Anthony trailed 11-10 after one quarter, but were outscored 14-4 in the second period to trail 25-14 at halftime. A 16-16 third quarter left the game at 41-30, and St. Anthony outscored Metro East Lutheran 21-17 in the final stanza to account for the seven-point final.

St. Anthony made 33% of its shots, and hit 12 of 19 foul shots. The Bulldogs made seven of 20 threes, committed just nine turnovers, but grabbed just 17 rebounds.

Metro East Lutheran made 52% of its shots, including two of eight threes, made 12 of 20 foul shots, turned the ball over 13 times and pulled down 30 rebounds.

Teddy Fifer scored 27 points to pace Metro East Lutheran, now 16-3 and rated in the Top Five in Class 1A boys basketball.

Cade Walsh scored 13 points and Drew Gibson tallied 12 points to pace St. Anthony, now 10-7 on the season.
