Hearts, Bulldogs Pick Up Conference Wins, Girls Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Salem and claimed a big Apollo Conference win Thursday evening, 55-52 in overtime.

The Hearts edged out to a 14-11 opening quarter lead but Salem came back to lead 19-16 at halftime. EHS then had a slight 12-11 edge in the third period to pull within 30-28 going into the final quarter.

The Hearts had a 17-15 edge to tie the score and send the game into overtime. In the overtime period, EHS had a 10-7 run for the win to improve to 3-2 in the conference, 14-4 overall.

Carsyn Fearday tallied 21 and Marranda Steffen 14 for the winners.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony stepped out to a 16-7 opening quarter lead and led 35-20 at halftime before taking a 67-29 win over Shelbyville Thursday evening.

"It was a good game for us defensively," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "We held them to nine points in the second half and forced 31 turnovers for the game.

"Kyla Burton, Abby Brown and Maddie Schuette had great games tonight on both ends of the floor. Weis and McDevitt were consistent as always."

Abby Weis tallied 14 while Burton scored 11. Emily McDevitt finished with nine points. Hunter Niebrugge pulled down seven rebounds while McDevitt had four asssits and Weis five steals.

The Bulldogs are now 11-9 on the season.

St. Anthony won the junior varsity contest 50-15.

At St. Joseph

Teutopolis put together 54 points in downing host St. Joseph-Ogden 54-43 in action Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes broke a 13-13 opening quarter tie with a 14-10 second period run. T-town then put together a 27-20 second half.

Molly Smith led in scoring with 28 points. She connected on 10 points in the opening quarter on two trifectas and two regular field goals. She finished out hitting four three-pointers and was four of four at the line.

J. Bueker pulled down eight rebounds while Drees and Hartke had six each.

At Altamont

Altamont trailed until halftime then went on a run, outscoring South Central 31-9 in the second half for a 51-33 National Trail Conference victory.

The Cougars held a 12-8 opening quarter lead as Keely Smith scored seven points and Autumn McCoy five. That lead stood at 24-18 at halftime as Smith scored five more.

But the Indians came back both offensively and defensively with a 19-2 run. Mette tallied six points for the winners and South Central was held to only two free throws.

Altamont had a 12-7 final quarter. The Cougars had only one field goal in the second half. Mette and Stone led the Indians with 13 points each.

"We played a very good first half with everybody getting involved in our offense and working hard on defense," said South Central  Coach Gary Kapper. "The second half, Altamont just took it to us offensively and defensively. They did not allow us to get very many shots. Offensively they were able to move the ball quickly to find the open player."

South Central drops to 1-3 in the conference, 7-9 overall.

Ramsey edged Dieterich 51-50 in a non-conference contest Thursday.

Ramsey held a 23-21 halftime lead and outscored the Movin' Maroons 14-7 to lead 37-28 going into the final quarter. Dieterich mounted a huge comeback with a 22-14 run only to fall short.

Three players hit double figures for the Maroons. Kallee Heuerman scored 16 while Madison Bannick had 15 and Kelsey Webb 10. Heuerman led in rebounds with eight. Bannick had four assists and four steals.

Dieterich dropped to 6-12 on the season.

Wayne City captured the championship of the Midland Trail Conference Tournament Thursday evening.

Wayne City defeated Webber Township (Bluford) 56-43 in the title contest.

In the third place game, Woodlawn was a 38-36 winner over North Clay (Louisville).

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Christonia Saddler (Sandoval), Mikayla Stanfield (North Clay), Taytum Murdoch (Woodlawn), Kaylea Potter (Webber Township), Lucy Smith (Wayne City) and MVP Allyson Bass (Wayne City).

 

At Arthur

Neoga fell to Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 82-74. The Indians held a 23-19 first quarter lead but ALAH came back to lead 41-32 at halftime.

ALAH then had an 18-9 third quarter run and held off Neoga in the final period. Wallen tallied 26 for the winners while Fifer added 14, Kauffman 13, Miller 11 and Shipman 10.

Neoga was led by EC Thies with 29, Morrison with 14 and Jaycie Roy with 12.

Tabbert tallied 17 points while Schuler added 14 and Schlechte 10.
