ALTAMONT -- Effingham and Altamont each claimed a win in junior high boys basketball play Thursday evening.

Effingham was a winner in seventh-grade action, 57-17. The Mustangs took a 27-11 halftime lead then had a 30-6 second half run.

Duncan led the Mustangs, who improve to 10-4, with 16 points. Altamont was led by Eirhart with eight.

In the eighth-grade contest, Altamont picked up a 40-35 win. Altamont trailed 21-20 at halftime then had a 20-14 second half run.

Kollman tallied 29 points for the winners. Effingham was led by Niebrugge and Cramsey with nine points each. Utz had four steals. Shackelford had seven rebounds while Cramsey had six.

At Effingham

Shelbyville came calling and claimed a 39-33 seventh-grade victory over Effingham St. Anthony.

The Bullpups held an 8-7 opening quarter lead and led 12-11 at halftime. Shelbyville then had a 16-11 third period to pull out the win.

Walsh led the Bullpups with 12 points.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis claimed the seventh-grade B contest while Stewardson-Strasburg was a winner in eighth-grade action.

T-town B took a 30-15 halftime lead and went on for a 59-24 win in the seventh-grade game. Mersman tallied 17, Weidner 14 and Niebrugge 11 for the Shoes.

Stew-Stras was led by Wernsing with 13 as the squad dropped to 3-15.

In the eighth-grade game, Stew-Stras won over T-town B 31-22 to improve to 6-9.

Stew-Stras trailed 12-9 after the opening quarter and the score was tied at 16-16 at halftime. Stew-Stras then had a 15-6 second half run.

Kirby scored 16 and Wernsing 11 for the winners. T-town was led by Deters with six.

At Clay City

North Clay (Louisville) claimed the championship of the Junior Midland Trail Conference Tournament with a 47-39 win over Cisne Thursday evening.

North Clay trailed 11-10 at the start but took a 27-15 halftime lead. Cisne came back in the second half with a 24-20 run but that second period was the deciding factor.

Luke Fleener scored 15 and Tysen Jones 14 for the winners. This was the last season for the tournament as the conference will now disband. North Clay is 15-5.

At Toledo

Cumberland and Jasper County split victories. Cumberland won the seventh-grade contest 37-15.

Cutts tallied 20 for the winners. Adam Koebele had five for Jasper County.

In the eighth-grade game, Jasper County was a 32-24 winner. Jarrett Tharp scored nine and Kyle Schafer seven. Hemmen scored eight for Cumberland.
