Effingham posted a 37-27 win over St. Anthony in high school girls basketball involving the two city schools Tuesday night. The game was aired on KJ Country 102.3. A video replay of the game is available below.

It didn't look like the game would be much of a contest, as Effingham scored the first 12 points. St. Anthony came back, though, to score the next 12 points and tie the game and the battle was joined. Effingham scored the final three points of the second quarter to take a 15-12 halftime lead.

The Lady Hearts outscored the Lady Bulldogs 7-5 in the third period and led 22-17. Effingham was finally able to put some distance between them and St. Anthony, re-establishing a 12-point lead in the final quarter before winning by 10.

Great defense by both ballclubs affected the shooting and the score. Effingham made 11 of 28 shots for 39%, including one of six on threes. St. Anthony made 12 of 36 shots for 33%, including three of 10 threes. The game was decided at the foul line, where Effingham made 14 of 23 shots, while St. Anthony only shot two free throws and missed both of them. Effingham outrebounded St. Anthony 22-17, and St. Anthony had 18 turnovers to 17 for Effingham.

Effingham freshman Carsyn Fearday led all scorers with 18 points and also grabbed five rebounds to tie for the team lead. Also for Effingham: Aly Armstrong, Marranda Steffen and Miranda Fox each scored five points, and Shelby Myers scored four points.

Emily McDevitt and Abby Brown each scored five points for St. Anthony; Emma Richards, Hunter Niebrugge and Abbie Schmidt each scored four points; Maddie Schuette three, and Abby Weis two points.

Effingham improved to 13-4 on the season, while St. Anthony is now 10-9.
