NEWTON -- Effingham High School had an 11-4 overtime lead to pull out a 43-36 victory over host Newton Monday evening in girls basketball.

The Hearts edged out to a 6-5 opening quarter lead and led 15-13 at hafltime. Both teams tallied 10 points in the third period before the Eagles mounted a rally and knotted the score at 32-32 sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime session, the Hearts had an 11-4 run to pull out the 43-36 win. Carsyn Fearday tallied 15 for the winners while Shelby Myers added 14.

"This was a tough one tonight," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Both teams really struggled. Our defense is the only reason we got out of there with a win. To our girls' credit we kept pushing through our struggles and just found a way. We had our highest scoring quarter in overtime. I don't really have the answer. We just have to continue to work hard and improve every day. We just feel really fortunate to have found the will to get the job done tonight."

Effingham improves to 12-6 while Newton drops to 12-6. The Hearts head to St. Anthony tonight.
