The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes and Effingham Hearts went toe-to-toe for 32 minutes Tuesday night, with the Wooden Shoes emerging with the championship of the Effingham/Teutopolis Classic. The Shoes' Devin Smith sank a foul shot with 2.2 seconds remaining to give Teutopolis a 48-47 win in a game heard and seen via live video and audio streaming on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com .

It was literally anybody's ballgame. Effingham captured a brief eight-point lead and Teutopolis never led by more than four, so every possession carried extra meaning. Effingham led 15-11 after one quarter and was in front 27-23 at halftime. The Hearts were still up 39-37 after three quarters before the Shoes outscored Effingham 11-8 in the final quarter to capture the win.

A capacity crowd saw Effingham's Grant Wolfe put the team on his back in the second half, scoring 18 of the Hearts' 20 points after intermission. Wolfe finished with 22 points, going six of 13 from the field and nine of 11 from the foul line for the ballgame. Jacob Donaldson was also in double figures with 10 first half points. Sean Zerrusen scored nine points and led the Hearts with five rebounds. Reed Schafer, Jared Minor and Brady Jackson each scored two points.

Devin Smith not only made the winning foul shot, he scored 11 points, shared rebounding honors with Brett Mette with seven apiece, and contributed to a number of steals by getting his hands on Effingham passes. Mitch Hardiek led Teutopolis in scoring with 12 points, Brett Mette scored nine points to go with the seven boards, Chris Ungrund scored six points, Michael Drees and Brant Bueker each scored four points, and Kyle Smith scored two points.

Teutopolis made 44% of its shots, 22 of 50, got its only point from the line on Devin Smith's game-winner (the only time the Shoes went to the line in the game), committed 10 turnovers, grabbed 22 rebounds and made three of 15 threes.

Effingham made 49% of its shots, 17 of 35, made nine of 12 from the line, turned the ball over 17 times, pulled down 19 rebounds and made four of 11 threes.

Teutopolis went 4-0 in the tournament and improved to 12-1 on the season. Effingham is now 8-4, finishing 2-2 in the tournament.
