Hearts, Bulldogs Take Two Wins in Girls Tourney Play

CHARLESTON -- Effingham captured two victories in opening round play of the 23rd Annual Charleston Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament Monday.

The Hearts defeated Charleston Junior Varsity 40-29. The Hearts trailed 11-7 after the opening quarter but had an 8-0 second period run to lead 15-11 at halftime. The Hearts then had a 25-18 second half.

Carsyn Fearday tallied 19 points for EHS.

In the second game, Effingham again trailed after the opening quarter, this time 14-9 to Decatur Eisenhower. EHS then had an 18-11 second period run to lead 27-25 at halftime. Eisenhower had a 16-15 edge in the third period to pull within 42-41 going into the final quarter. EHS then had a 15-13 final period to pull out the victory.

Fearday tallied 17 while Marranda Steffen chipped in with 12. The Hearts are now 8-3 on the season.

In other games, Paris defeated Decatur Eisenhower 61-49, Charleston won over Rantoul 72-43, Danville defeated Urbana 70-48, Paris downed Charleston JV 54-16, Danville beat Rantoul 52-33 and Charleston defeated Urbana 79-51.

Eight games are on tap today that will dictate the finals for Wednesday.

Mattoon Tournament

Effingham St. Anthony picked up two victories in opening round play of the 37th Annual Mattoon Holiday Tournament Monday.

The Bulldogs defeated host Mattoon 50-41. The Green Wave held a 9-6 opening quarter lead and led 19-12 at halftime. The Bulldogs rallied with an 18-6 run to lead 30-25 going into the final quarter then outscored Mattoon 20-16.

Abby Weis led St. Anthony in scoring with 22 points as she connected on three trifectas. Emma Richards chipped in with 14.

In the second contest, St. Anthony defeated Sullivan 51-31. The Bulldogs held a 22-13 halftime lead then edged the Redskins 11-9 in the third period and had an 18-9 final quarter.

E. Richards tallied 12 as the lone player in double figures for the Bulldogs who are now 10-5 on the season.

In other games Monday, Olney defeated Decatur MacArthur, Salem won over Vandalia 61-58, Galesburg bounced Sullivan 66-39, Vandalia defeated Decatur MacArthur 71-42, Salem downed Olney 71-54 and Galesburg tallied a73-47 win over Mattoon.
