Altamont Claims Okaw Valley Championship, Shoes Beat Carterville

Altamont High School captured the championship of the Okaw Valley Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

The Indians defeated LSA 46-22 in the title contest. The Indians jumped out to a 12-3 opening quarter lead and led 18-8 at halftime. Altamont had another big scoring quarter in the third with a 12-6 run as Leah Mayhaus led the way with six points.

Altamont finished out with a 16-8 run in the final period. Tinley Mette tallied eight of her nine total points in that final quarter.

The Indians had even scoring with Mette tallying nine, Mayhaus eight, Brooke Burns eight and Shelbi Stone eight.

The third place contest went to Okaw Valley over Maroa-Forsyth 47-38.

In the consolation championship, Farmer City/Blue Ridge defeated Teutopolis junior varsity 53-36. The score was tied at 12-12 after the opening quarter and 23-23 at halftime. Blue Ridge edged ahead with a 12-9 third quarter run then broke the game wide open with an 18-4 final period surge.

T-town was led by Grimes with 11 points.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Keidron Duckwitz and Lindsay Mayhaus of Altamont, Denead Santini of Maroa-Forysth, Taryn Karstens of LSA, Josie Grammer of Farmer City/Blue Ridge and the tournament most valuable player, Paige Robinson of Okaw Valley.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis played host to Carterville and claimed a 50-27 varsity victory Saturday. It was Coach Laurie Thompson's 250th victory.

The Wooden Shoes took a 13-9 opening quarter lead and led 29-14 at halftime. Thompson was the lone Wooden Shoe player in double figures with 22. She connected on six three-pointers and had 14 points by halftime.

Hartke finished with nine points, pulled down seven rebounds and had five steals. Thompson had five boards.
