Bulldogs, Hearts Both Earn Tough Wins (UPDATE)

Both the St. Anthony Bulldogs and the Effingham Hearts earned hard-fought victories Friday night in boys high school basketball.

St. Anthony won 59-50 at Dieterich, while Effingham won a close one at Mt. Zion 61-59. The Bulldogs/Maroons game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  

The St. Anthony/Dieterich game was anyone's ballgame for most of the contest. The game was tied 12-12 after one quarter and Dieterich led 24-23 at halftime. St. Anthony had been down eight, though, shortly before halftime when they started a comeback that brought them within one at the break.

St. Anthony then outscored Dieterich 15-9 in the third quarter to take a 38-33 lead. The fourth quarter saw Dieterich come by to tie the game, then see St. Anthony push back out to a five- to seven-point lead before a last second bucket gave them the nine-point winning margin.

Junior Drew Gibson helped key the St. Anthony comeback, scoring 14 of his 16 points in the second half, and grabbed seven rebounds including four offensive boards. Jeff Niebrugge gave indication of an inside presence, scoring 12 points despite battling foul trouble. Also for St. Anthony: Nick Grunloh 9, Cade Walsh 7, James Kabbes 5, Chandler Martelli 5, Kyle Hartke 5.

Lance Niemerg led Dieterich with 18 points while Nick Feldhake scored 15 points, 11 in the fourth quarter. Travis Niemerg scored eight points, Trenton Poe six, Ryan Radloff two, and Callaway Campton one.

St. Anthony made 19 of 49 shots for 39%, including four of 15 threes, while making 17 of 25 foul shots, committing 16 turnovers and grabbing 30 rebounds.

Dieterich made 12 of 37 shots for 32% including four of 12 threes, hit 22 of 31 foul shots, turned the ball over 17 times and pulled down 28 rebounds.

St. Anthony moved back over .500 at 5-4 on the season, while Dieterich fell to 7-3.

St. Anthony won the JV game 55-36. Cade Walsh and Alex Deters each scored 10 points for the JV Bulldogs, while Ryan Radloff and Callaway Campton each scored 10 points for the JV Movin Maroons.
