TAYLORVILLE -- Effingham's girls squad finished second in the Taylorville Freshman Basketball Tournament Saturday.

In the opening round, the Hearts beat Hillsboro, 39-28. EHS stepped out to a 22-9 first half lead and never looked back. Carie tallied 15 and Webster 10 for the Hearts.

Effingham then defeated Pana 38-20. The Hearts again stepped out to a big lead, 22-11 at halftime. Carie scored 20 for the Hearts.

EHS then fell to Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin, 38-35 in the championship game. Sacred Heart Griffin took a 24-16 halftime lead but the Mustangs fought back in the final quarter, knotting the score at 35-35, sending the game into overtime. In the overtime period, Springfield came back with a 3-0 run for the victory.

Carie scored 13 and Buscher nine for the Mustangs.

At Flora

Effingham split victories in freshman/sophomore boys basketball action Saturday with Flora.

The Hearts won the freshman contest 56-26. EHS took a 35-11 halftime lead. Dylan Bushur scored 15 while Cooper Jackson added nine for the Hearts.

In sophomore action, the Hearts held a 9-8 opening quarter lead but Flora took a 25-23 halftime tally. The Hearts had a 17-9 third quarter run to lead 40-34 going into the final quarter. But Flora rallied for a 15-9 final period run to pull out the 59-49 victory.

Effingham was led by Ryan Sandifer with 12 points and Alec Morrissey with 10.

 At Teutopolis

Teutopolis defeated visiting Highland in boys freshman/sophomore action Saturday. The freshman contest was close throughout. T-town converted on 14 of 18 free throws to claim a 37-34 win.

Dawson Smith had 17 points.

In the sophomore game, T-town jumped out to a 17-6 first quarter lead. Highland narrowed the lead to six in the second period. The game remained close with T-town outscoring Highland by three in the second half for the 56-47 win.

Lee Hardiek tallied 22 and Eric Kremer 16 for the Shoes. Brandt Young chipped in with nine.
